Position Title: Municipal Physical Activity Leader (MPAL)

Reports To: Deputy Clerk

Direct Reports: Contracted Staff, as needed

Overview

In partnership with Nova Scotia Communities, Culture, Tourism & Heritage (CCTH), the Town of Pictou and the Municipality of the County of Pictou have created the position of Municipal Physical Activity Leader (MPAL) to facilitate improvements in physical activity rates.

The MPAL is responsible to act on the municipalities’ behalf to implement the Active Living Strategy. Areas of focus include Active Transportation and trails.

This position requires communication and interaction with local, provincial, and federal government levels. The position provides advice and assistance to trails and recreation groups that have a role to play in improving the quality of life of our citizens. The MPAL also collaborates with the recreation and community development staff at both municipal units and within the region.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance and project management to organizations in the development of Active Transportation initiatives and the completion of the Trans Canada Trail in Pictou County
  • Create social change by supporting the least active to be more active
  • Preparing and submitting grant proposals
  • Financial and program management
  • Serve as an ongoing liaison with the CCTH Regional Office on physical activity initiatives in Pictou County
  • Assist organizations with improving policy and programs that support positive and healthy environments through recreation and physical activity opportunities that are sustainable
  • Implement a social marketing plan that is part of a larger public awareness campaign
  • Oversee employees related to specific initiatives

Qualifications and Training

Education and Experience:

  • A degree or diploma in Recreation, Community Development, Education, Health or related field
  • At least three years experience in any of these fields or similar environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Strong leadership skills, preferably in a recreation or community development environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • A high degree of initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication, organizational and presentation skills
  • Computer and social media skills are essential
  • Financial management considered an asset

Conditions of Employment

  • Salary range of $47,000 to $52,000 based on 35 hours per week
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required
  • Participation in defined contribution retirement and comprehensive benefits plans
  • Non-unionized full-time position
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license
  • Compensation for personal vehicle use, as required
