This is a full-time permanent position, working 75 hours bi-weekly.

Our Building & Safety Standards Unit is responsible for ensuring that buildings meet the current building/plumbing codes and standards throughout the Yukon. This position is responsible for conducting building and plumbing inspections on all new construction projects within the central Yukon area which includes Carcross, Tagish, Johnson's Crossing, Carmacks, Haines Junction, Destruction Bay, Burwash, Beaver Creek and Whitehorse area (except within the City of Whitehorse). Responsibilities include building/plumbing inspections, building/plumbing plan review and permit application approval. Additionally, answering building/plumbing questions from the public in our office at the front counter, in person, on jobsites, on the phone or via email.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Journeyman’s Red Seal ticket in Carpentry
  • Experience reviewing plans and conducting inspections for an authority having jurisdiction
  • Experience working with the building or plumbing permit application process
  • Knowledge of National Building and Plumbing Codes of Canada

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Knowledge of appropriate construction practices and the permit application process
  • Ability to review plans for compliance
  • Ability to use tact and persuasive communication skills when dealing with stakeholders
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards and safety, its application, and any applicable legislation
  • Ability to work independently and be adaptable to work situations
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Customer service skills and experience
  • Knowledge of MS Office (ie. Word, Excel, Outlook, databases, etc.)

Additional Information:

Condition(s) of Employment: Valid Class 5 driver’s licence

Job Requirements: Lifting weights up to 25lbs; climbing ladders and scaffolding; working in confined spaces; extensive travel within Yukon by motor vehicle, airplane or boat; working in adverse weather conditions, and mandatory use of personal protective equipment and branch safety plan.
