About Us


The Hansard Reporting Services prepares and publishes the official report of the debates of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, Committees of the Whole House, Standing and Select Committees, legislative commissions, and conferences.


Hansard is a substantially verbatim report. It permits minor edits to aid readability while retaining a speaker’s meaning and intent.


About Our Opportunity


Production of the official report is a joint effort. Hansard Transcribers type a transcript from digital audio recordings. Proofreaders read the transcript to verify the spoken word, proper names, grammar and spelling, and to format text. As an Associate Editor, you will review the work they completed.


Primary Accountabilities


You will also:

  • Verify the accuracy of names, programs, places, and documentation read into the record of the House of Assembly.
  • Use the Sliq software to merge proofread segments into the edit stream.
  • Review and analyze merged segments to ensure clarity, consistency, logical expression of language, and accuracy of grammar and spelling.
  • Attend committee meetings to provide annotations for use in preparing transcripts.
  • Publish completed transcripts to the Legislature’s website.
  • In the absence of the Editor of Debates, provide direction to Transcriptionists and Proofreaders and exercise informed judgment on matters such as format and content.
  • Confer with Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), caucus staff and department staff to resolve queries.
  • Respond to requests for specific documentation and conduct research to fulfill them.

You will report the to the Editor of Debates.


Qualifications and Experience


You have 5 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered, such as a bachelor’s degree with 1 year of related experience.


You have exceptional communication skills (written and verbal) and an extensive knowledge of English grammar, spelling, vocabulary and sentence structure. You possess a high degree of professionalism and a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks. You work well both independently and as part of a team.


You are familiar with Hansard and have superior knowledge of MLA names, constituencies, ministerial portfolios, legislation, and current events. You have previous experience instructing or training staff. Your assets may include familiarity with the Sliq software platform, facility with learning new software, and fluency in written and spoken French.

Pay Grade: CL 22

Salary Range: $1,868.53 - $2,066.70 Bi-Weekly
