Reporting to the Director, Law, and as a member of the Law Leadership Team, the Assistant Director provides strategic legal advice and plays a fundamental role in protecting, defending, and advancing The City’s interests and assets. Their duties include providing management and oversight of Legal Services’ business and people within Legal Services’ Advocacy Division, representing Legal Services at various Council and Council Committee meetings as identified by the Director, Law and leading and participating in corporate projects where there is significant risk and value to the corporation.

The position is also member of the Corporate Management Team (CMT) and has a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy within a team-oriented environment. Primary duties include:

  • Lead, participate, and sponsor significant business unit and corporate projects that carry high value and risks to the corporation.
  • Advise on legal matters of considerable consequence to The City.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the managers and staff within Legal Services’ Advocacy Division. This includes maintaining efficiency and effectiveness, hiring and supervising direct reports, overseeing performance measures, workload, employee engagement, coaching and mentoring, and human resources functions (for example: performance development, employee issues, alignment to The City’s and Law’s goals).
  • Represent Legal Services at Council when required and on various Council Committees as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with the Assistant Director responsible for the Legal Services’ Corporate Division and provide back-up and coverage for each other.
  • Manage relationships between Legal Services and other business units and departments.
Qualifications

The City is looking for an experienced strategic thinker who can build strong working relationships with others within The City and region. Our ideal candidate can demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and be an active member in good standing with The Law Society of Alberta.
  • At least 10 years of experience as a practicing lawyer with a focus on municipal law.
  • People leadership and project experience is essential.
  • Corporate knowledge and experience providing advice to Council and Committees is considered an asset.
  • Proven self-management skills; high energy and self-motivation; and strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict management skills.
  • An ability to identify and raise issues of concern and recommend effective solutions and the ability to thrive in a team environment.
