The Forest Health Data Scientist is the expert data scientist for ministry large scale, complex projects. The Forest Health Data Scientist will be responsible for the management and analysis of existing FH data and the modernization of the program’s data capture, analytical and archiving tools. This position will lead enterprise or ministry-wide projects which are significant in terms of government priorities. This position applies expert advice and knowledge pertaining to all overarching data science to unique business scenarios.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, GIS, Statistics, Mathematics, or Forestry, or a related field and 3 years related experience; or
  • A diploma in Data Science, Computer Science, GIS, Statistics, Mathematics, or Forestry, or a related field and 5 years related experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Related experience may include:

  • Experience at leveraging structured and unstructured data sources to conduct quantitative analysis.
  • Experience determining appropriate use of various problem structuring methods and statistical methods for sampling, distribution assessment, bias, and error.
  • Familiarity or experience with machine learning, clustering, and classification techniques to analyze diverse sources of data.
  • Experience creating and delivering executive-level presentations for the purpose of decision making.

Preference may be given to applicants:

  • Registered Professional Biologist with the College of Applied Biologists
  • Registered Forest Technologist with the Association of BC Forest Professionals
