Transit Maintenance Person

Job Summary:

The incumbent supplies custodial and light maintenance services to the Transit Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Fuels buses and other Transit vehicles.
2. Washes, cleans and maintains Transit buses.
3. Supplies janitorial services at the Transit building.
4. Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
5. Changes the fare box vaults and secures cash.
6. Purchases and maintains supplies.
7. Removes snow in front of bus bays and main doors.
8. Takes spare buses to drivers.
9. Provides general maintenance to transit benches and shelters.
10. Inserts and removes advertising on buses/shelters and benches.
11. Ensures the building and yard are secured at the end of the shift.
12. Operates a Transit bus in emergency situations.

Job Requirements:

Working Conditions:

Exposed to disagreeable conditions such as dust, dirt, fumes, odours, grease, oil, noise and temperature extremes & inclement weather when working outside and in the bus barn/wash bay, and cleaning buses and washrooms.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Grade 10 education
  • Valid Class 2 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement
  • Previous Experience - Minimum 1 year custodial and minor mechanical experience
  • On-the-Job Experience – 3 months

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Cleaning equipment, high pressure washer, mobile radio, and motor coach, handy bus, and parts truck, computers for communication and ADP, small maintenance and repair tools such as cordless drills and wrenches.
