Qualifications:
  • Minimum High School Diploma/GED
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Hire is dependent upon a pre-employment medical examination in accordance with the NFPA 1582 document
  • Meet the physical demands of the position
  • Hire is dependent upon obtaining and maintaining a Valid Alberta Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement or higher (or Provincial equivalent) prior to time of hire; Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Certifications / Licenses Required: (refer to the checklist above, these are required as part of your application. Proof of enrollment will not be accepted).

  • Completion of High School Diploma/GED
  • And a minimum requirement of one of the following certifications valid at the time of application
    • Certified 80 hrs Advanced First Aid (AFA) Alberta OHS approved course or provincial equivalent
    • Certified Medical First Responder (MFR) - 80 hrs AFA OHS approved course
    • Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) registration or provincial equivalent
    • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP or EMT or EMT-A) or Advanced Care Paramedic (EMT-P) certification, courses must be ACP approved and candidates must be eligible to apply for ACP registration (you are eligible to apply for general registration if you have graduated from an approved education program and are within one year of completing your ACP approved course) or provincial equivalent
    • Bachelor of Nursing with active registration with the College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) or provincial equivalent
    • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or provincial equivalent

Further considerations for your application:

  • A practical understanding of a wide range of subjects related to: fire, rescue, dangerous goods, building construction and EMS, including the ability to operate and understand the operation of mechanical equipment would be considered an asset
  • Ability to carry out orders combined with the capacity to assess and act on own initiative and work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills coupled with effective judgment and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders; excellent interpersonal, time management, and customer service skills are required
  • Previous Firefighting or emergency response experience would be considered an asset
  • Experience working or volunteering in your community or with racialized people and other equity seeking groups would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge and ability to navigate through a second language or sign language would be considered an asset
  • Awareness and ability to communicate inclusively and respectfully with diverse community members
  • Embraces and actively promotes the behaviour and values of an inclusive, diverse and respectful work environment
  • Recognition of the importance of mental health, and an attitude of empathy, respect and support for those facing mental health challenges
  • Ability to engage in periods of intense and sustained physical activity. Ongoing commitment to physical fitness as well as mental and emotional health and resilience.
