Pipefitter/Plumber

Location: Pinawa, Manitoba

Schedule: Four (4) - 10 hour shifts - Monday to Thursday

Job Summary

The Pipefitter/Plumber is responsible for performing their work in an efficient and timely manner. The incumbent must adhere to industry standards for installation, repairs, and safety. Decisions on tasks performed by trades will be based on the Red Seal Occupational Analysis.

CNL Employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.

Qualifications

Education

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must have completed apprenticeship training or equivalent and be qualified as Steamfitter-Pipefitter / Plumber with an Interprovincial Red Seal ticket.

Experience

  • Must have 3 (three) years’ experience as a qualified Steamfitter- Pipefitter/Plumber.

Abilities and Skills

The incumbent should have:

  • A certified Steamfitter-Pipefitter has the knowledge, ability and skills to do lay outs, assembles, fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs piping systems used to carry steam, water, air, gases, chemicals, solids and fuel in industrial and manufacturing plants and in water purification and water treatment systems. They install piping systems in a commercial building or industrial plant.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, codes, drawings and specifications to determine the type and size of pipe and tools to use;
  • Make detailed sketches for pipe and equipment fabrication and installation;
  • Fabricate, lay out and assemble fittings, spools and supports
  • Measure, cut, shape, thread, groove, bend and join pipes and related equipment such as valves and fittings;
  • Install equipment, supports, pipes, tubes, controls and accessories;
  • If necessary, modify structures to accommodate the pipes;
  • They must test for leaks;
  • Carry out quality control checks on all work performed;
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair
  • They install, examine, repair or replace:
  • Brackets, clamps and other supports for pipes
  • Piping, controls and components of fuel burning equipment
  • Pneumatic, steam and hot water heating systems
  • Complete assemblies and components of boiler units
  • Low and high pressure heating systems
  • Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in the following areas of study:
  • Mathematics, Science and Communications related to the trade
  • Sketching and Blueprint Reading
  • Steam Heating
  • Hot Water Heating and Hot Water Boiler Assemblies
  • Oxyacetylene and Arc Welding
  • Pipe Hook-ups
  • Safety
  • Rural Installation
  • Theory and Water Supply
  • Hot and Cold Water Supplies
  • Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records;
  • Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded;
  • Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Exceptional organizational skills, able to prioritize and time management is required;
  • Ability to understand detailed information is essential;
  • Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one’s work;
  • Conscientious about accuracy;
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and response with initiative;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders; and
  • Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs
  • Gas – Levels 1-4 are dedicated to the Steamfitter-Pipefitter curriculum with the first level of Domestic Gasfitter training to support the domestic gasfitter's license under the Gas and Oil Burner Act. Level 5 is dedicated to the second level of Domestic Gasfitter training to support the domestic gasfitter's license under the Gas and Oil Burner Act.
  • Note: Gasfitter training is now mandatory component within technical training to support the domestic gasfitter's license.
  • Certified Plumbers plan, install, maintain, inspect and repair plumbing systems, fixtures, equipment and controls in residential and commercial buildings. Some plumbers may install piping systems in new home construction, in commercial, industrial and public buildings, or be experts in retrofitting, repair and maintenance of existing systems. Residential plumbing is very different from industrial or commercial work. On a typical construction job, plumbers do the "roughing in" after the frame and roof of a new building are in place. At a commercial worksite, plumbers might install restaurant kitchens and dishwashing stations, sewage treatment plants, or a public water system. They might work with hydronic, heating/cooling, natural and liquefied petroleum gas systems or private sewage disposal, pumps and specialty piping.
  • A certified Plumber has been trained to:
  • locate and mark the positions for connections and fixtures, then cut the required holes through walls, ceilings and floors
  • select the type and size of pipe required for a project, then measure, cut, shape and join pipes, elbows and joints according to the project specifications
  • thread, bend and clamp pipe and secure piping connections by gluing, soldering, welding, fusing or clamping connections together
  • diagnose and locate leaks, broken or frozen pipes, plugged drains and pipes
  • test for leaks in new and repaired systems with compressed air and/or water
  • clean and thaw drains and pipes with chemicals and power steamers
  • install gauges, thermostats, valves and fittings
  • install, repair and maintain water softeners, garbage disposals, lawn sprinklers, dishwashers and other appliances
  • install water closets, sinks, basins, baths, urinals and bidets
  • install and maintain water purification, water piping and sewage disposal systems

  • Work from drawings and sketches as required, able to provide material take-offs and labour estimates.
  • Read, interpret engineering drawings and weld to the engineering specifications as outlined.
  • Good planning and organizational abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, especially when working with customers.
  • Teamwork skills when working on large projects with co-workers.
  • Work proficiently in a variety of assigned tasks.
  • Highly motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Problem solving abilities to change installation techniques to on-site working conditions.
  • Experience in a wide variety of industrial work environments.
  • Physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work.
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods of time, work in awkward or cramped confined locations.
  • Strength and the ability to work at heights on construction and industrial sites.
  • Work on scaffolds, ladders and mobile lifts.
  • Eye-hand coordination and dexterity and their ability to plan and think sequentially as well as three-dimensionally.
  • Manual dexterity required to perform precision work.
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and the effectiveness of the equipment being used.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools; and, their ability to determine the most appropriate means of proceeding with the work.
  • Able to wear and work in protective clothing including respirators.
  • Mechanical ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
  • Determine how equipment operates by looking at a diagram or blueprint.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
