About Us


The Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables manages the responsible development of the Province’s mineral resource assets along with scientific support of public health and safety through regional mapping, water resource, and hazard mapping programs. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes a team of expert geoscientists who are responsible for delivering high quality, timely geoscience data, information, services, and support to a wide range of stakeholders, including all levels of government, industry, academia, and the public.


About Our Opportunity


The Mineral Occurrences Geologist will be responsible for updating and improving a mineral occurrence database. This will provide expertise on the mineral occurrences in the province, in particular for critical minerals.


Primary Accountabilities


Specific duties of the position include:


  • Provide subject matter expertise for the improvement of a mineral occurrence database.
  • Substantial portion of time spent updating mineral occurrence information through research and analyses of industrial and academic reports.
  • Occasional ground-truthing of mineral occurrences and field activities to support geoscience research, when needed.
  • Providing geoscience expertise and support to the team, particularly to assess the province’s critical minerals potential.
  • Effectively communicating with management and other stakeholders in presentations and written communications.

Qualifications and Experience


This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor of Science in Earth Science or Geoscience plus 5 years of related experience with a focus on economic geology; or a Master of Science and 4 years of related experience; or a Doctorate with 2 years of related experience.


The ideal candidate has significant knowledge and experience with various mineral deposits and economic geology, as well as knowledge of Nova Scotian mineral deposits and mineral resource industry experience. You have experience performing in-depth research tasks such as collecting and analyzing data, reviewing and summarizing information, and disseminating your findings. You have demonstrable experience reporting highly specialized geoscience information to various audiences. With superior writing and public presentation skills, you possess the ability to convey your thoughts clearly. Attention to detail and comfort working independently are important.


Field experience for the purposes of research or mineral deposit modeling is a significant asset. Training and/or experience working with relational databases and SQL would be an asset. Experience with RDBMS software, geological database software and mapping software, as well as experience with Access, SQL Server and/or ArcGIS would be highly regarded.


You must possess a valid Class 5 drivers’ license. You should be registered or eligible to register with Geoscientists Nova Scotia.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


This is an office-based position with opportunities for field work (<20% of time) and with occasional opportunities for travel to meetings or conferences. In-province travel (department vehicle or helicopter) to project areas or sites will be required.

Pay Grade: PR 15

Salary Range: $2,666.69 - $3,250.64 Bi-Weekly
