This is manual work servicing automotive vehicles and equipment. The primary duties include moving vehicles/equipment in/out of the wash bays and performing all related washing and cleaning tasks. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions and involve primarily the non-mechanical servicing of vehicles and equipment. Incumbents may be assigned related tasks such as assisting mechanical tradespeople or completing a visual inspection of vehicles and equipment after their initial training. Work is checked in progress or upon completion for adherence to instructions and standards or is evaluated through equipment performance.

Duties will include:

  • Wash the outside of various types of vehicles having the physical ability to crouch and bend to ensure the entire vehicle including the undercarriage is cleaned
  • Clean the inside of vehicles when time permits
  • Pick up/deliver units to commercial vendors, in the field and other shops when requested
  • Tow or drive defective automotive equipment to a repair shop
  • Ensure shop floors are consistently cleaned
  • Use Fleet Management System software (M5) to perform data entry and time entry
  • Complete minor repairs to the entire range of City of Edmonton vehicles
  • Assist journeyman mechanics in the repair of automotive and construction equipment
  • Provide training/mentorship to new Auto Service Persons
  • Lubricate, transport and provide general service to the complete range of automotive, heavy truck, light truck, turf and small agricultural equipment, specialty units (ice resurfacer), construction equipment, components and attachments common to municipal and utility fleets
  • Change light bulbs, lenses, fuses, signal light flashers and windshield wiper blades
  • Complete field servicing as assigned
  • Review and apply knowledge related to information from Branch operating manuals, Corporate, Department and Branch procedural manuals, material safety data sheets and safety handbooks in order to accurately service and order parts for the jobs assigned
  • Responsible for their own health and safety along with co-workers and members of the public
  • Responsible for adhering to legislated requirements for environmental protection
  • Other related duties as required
Qualifications :
  • Grade 10 or equivalent
  • 1 year experience in servicing vehicles and equipment
  • Demonstrated technical skills related to the vehicles and equipment
  • Skilled driver with the ability to maneuver large vehicles and equipment in and out of wash bays
  • Demonstrated good work ethic and a willingness/ability to learn and mentor on the job and update skills
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job-related task and safety requirements
  • Ability to enter data using the Fleet Management System software (M5)
  • Experience in software applications such as Google, Email, and online OEM manuals
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of duties
  • Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation and a City medical examination
  • Must be able to wear a custom-fit respirator for extended periods of time
  • Ability to pass Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.), a timed upper body strength and mobility test, and pre-employment City medical examination is required
  • Valid Alberta Class 1 license with Air Brake endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City of Edmonton Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
