The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (“AFA”) exists to encourage and support the arts as a significant contributor to quality of life in Alberta. The AFA is a public agency and a provincial corporation of the Government of Alberta with a mandate to support and contribute to the development of the arts in Alberta. The AFA provides grant funding to artists and arts organizations to encourage the growth and development of the arts sector. The AFA also promotes the arts and manages an extensive provincial art collection featuring work from artists all over the province.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts reports to Alberta’s Minister of Culture and is guided by the objectives found in the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Act, 1991.

Role

Annually, the Arts Development team manages, processes, and administers over 2,000 submissions for funding and is responsible for delivering Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) public programs and funding opportunities. As an Arts Development Consultant with a background in Theatre Arts, you apply advanced knowledge and experience of provincial arts infrastructure to ensure public grant programs and funding opportunities meet the mission, goals, and vision of the AFA.

As part of a team of subject matter experts on AFA policies, program guidelines, planning principals, and trends, you provide consultative services to a broad range of clients including, but not limited to, individual artists, not-for-profit organizations, and the general public. Your knowledge of grant writing, grants management, artistic development, and current trends and issues impacting the sector inform your role and supports the AFA with front to back-end grants management, funding opportunity planning and monitoring, and development of recommendations on AFA funding guidelines and related policies.

Some of the key responsibilities include ensuring program delivery and grants management provide Albertans with access to grant funding by:

  • Providing in-depth consultative services and analysis on AFA policies and funding guidelines to artists, arts organizations, and other external and internal clients
  • Supporting grants management processes to ensure funding is allocated to artists and arts organizations efficiently, transparently, accurately, and in accordance with policies and standards
  • Developing tools and communications to facilitate grant application submissions and advise clients of policies and guidelines, including delivery of public workshops and programming
  • Researching, recruiting, and moderating expert panel adjudication on the deliberation and assessment process to inform funding recommendations.
  • Preparing and finalizing formula-funded and expert panel recommendations for committees and AFA Board approval.
  • Executing and completing all stages of the grants management process in alignment with standard operating procedures as set by Arts Development practices.


Additional responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring business operations are managed efficiently and with maximum effect
  • Consulting on partnership development and providing outreach to support long-term client viability
  • Building capacity for individual artists, arts organizations, and other AFA clients to support sustainability and long-term growth
  • Ensuring financial administration complies with government and AFA policies and applicable legislation to ensure equity and transparency in funding and grants management


As a member of Arts Development, you report to the Director, Arts Development, and draw upon the experience of a team consisting of peers with parallel subject-matter expertise to ensure consistency and equity in program delivery.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University degree in Arts, Fine Arts, or Arts Administration with a specialization in Theatre plus three year’s prior experience working in arts administration or grants management
  • Knowledge of issues, trends, and research in key subject areas appropriate to the business of the AFA
  • Knowledge of general accounting practices, board governance, and not-for-profit operational and administrative practices
  • Demonstrated experience with workshop development and public speaking


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Salary

$2,683.10 to $3,507.06 bi-weekly ($70,028 - $ 91,534/year)

Position Details:

  • Working Location: Capital Arts Building, 10708 105 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.


Position Requirements:

  • Ability to travel throughout the province is required, including overnights (approximately 10-15%)
