The Light Rail Transit (LRT) Operations Controller is responsible for maintaining the safety, quality, and efficiency of LRT service. Primary duties include:
  • Provide customer service, including leadership and direction, to Calgary Transit (CT) Operators through CT’s Radio Communications Network.
  • Ensure uninterrupted delivery of LRT service by addressing and solving issues and acting as the first point of contact in emergencies.
  • Frequently communicate service status updates to external customers and internal stakeholders, especially during service disruptions.
  • Complete reports for all incidents and occurrences to quantify output through performance measures developed to ensure divisional objectives are met.
  • Support the Occupational Health and Safety program by leading health and safety initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to highlight safety initiatives.
  • Implementation of CT’s response to emergencies and service disruptions in accordance with The City of Calgary’s Emergency Service Disaster Plan.
  • A High School Diploma or Equivalency (e.g., GED) or certified international equivalent.
  • At least 1 year experience as a qualified Controller for a light rail public transit system.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with recent experience in LRT Operations.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) as well as general computer use is required.
  • A valid full Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 3 demerits, and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • At time of interview, applicants must provide an original driver's abstract from all jurisdictions for which they have been a licensed driver in the last 2 years. The abstract must be no older than 60 days.
  • The successful applicant must be able to maintain LRT Rules and Operating proficiency (this requires the ability to pass a Class 2 Driver’s License Medical).
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary Operator’s permit.
  • Must be able to obtain LRT rulebook, right-of-way, and mainline operating proficiency.
  • A good understanding of Calgary Transit’s LRT system, service levels, and Customer Commitment are beneficial.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in verbal, and written form, as frequent e-mail and report writing is essential for success in this position.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work closely and effectively together with a wide variety of other employees in a busy team environment, and a noisy shared workspace.
  • Must be able to remain focused, calm, and highly effective in emergency and extremely stressful situations.
  • Success in this position requires relationship building, conflict and time management skills.
