Job Summary:
Resumes are being accepted for the position of Traffic Technologist with the Engineering and Transportation Services Department, Transportation Services Division. Reporting to the Supervisor, Traffic Engineering, the successful candidate will investigate traffic service requests and provide technical guidance as needed related to traffic engineering/operations with a focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement processes. Your role

  • Investigate and respond to traffic service requests, resident concerns and resolving general deficiencies in the roadway network.
  • Validate and analyze vehicle and pedestrian collision information to determine possible deficiencies in the roadway network/system and initiate recommendations for remedial action.
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining the daily operation of the City’s traffic signals and signal systems.
  • Develop signal timing and signal control strategies to facilitate traffic flow using computer software techniques. Using software programs, perform statistical analysis of traffic data and provide recommendations for traffic operational improvements.
  • Review traffic signal complaints, perform related traffic investigations and assist with recommending remedial action with regard to vehicular delay and pedestrian crossing concerns.
  • Determine temporary traffic control requirements for major capital works projects and special events ensuring the safe and efficient movement of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Assist with reviewing/developing signal plant designs based on acquired knowledge and traffic engineering principles.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to various stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports for Council/Committees of Council, including presentation and answering of questions.
  • Process oversized load permits.
  • Prepare monthly Traffic By-law amendments for Council.
  • Conduct field observations as required.
  • Provide back up support to crossing guard operations as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a three year diploma in Transportation Engineering or closely related field and 1 – 2 years experience working within traffic engineering or operations with an emphasis on traffic signal and traffic signal system activity, preferably in a municipal setting. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess a valid Class “G” driver’s licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manuals (OTM) and Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with City staff and the public.
  • Detail oriented and with a high attention for accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Experience with engineering software applications (e.g. Autocad, TES, ArcGIS) would be an asset.
  • Ability to prepare reports and present to an audience.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a demanding environment.
  • A satisfactory police record check (including vulnerable sector screening) would be required at time of offer.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Eligibility for membership in OACETT is considered a definite asset.

Rate

$31.36-$38.51 per hour
