The Strategy, Support and Integrated Initiatives division provides strategic and integrated policy and project services and functions for the ministry. The division’s focus centers on cross-divisional and cross-ministry projects such as strategic policy initiatives, business transformations like Justice Digital, and Federal-Provincial-Territorial initiatives, as well as integrated programs including restorative justice, community grants, specialized courts, libraries, Indigenous services, victims’ services, agency oversight, research and evaluation, operational data reporting, and business intelligence and analysis.

Role

Reporting to the Director, Specialized Courts and Restorative Justice, this position is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring and ongoing assessment of specialized courts and restorative justice programming. This includes identification and initiatives and strategies that will enhance the delivery of effective specialized courts and restorative justice programs to promote safe communities in Alberta, ensuring work is performed and consistent with provincial government policies/practices and in alignment with departmental goals, priorities and mandates.

The incumbent will be responsible for assessing grants proposals, provincial and federal funding programs, and monitoring and evaluating funded projects. This position is responsible for providing direction, assistance and training to department stakeholders, including community agencies, police services and volunteers.

As a special project, the incumbent will be involved in the department’s public engagement for the Community Justice Centres (CJC). This is a 12 month project that will require travel throughout the province to facilitate communities conversations around the development of CJCs. Additionally, the incumbent will support this initiative by drafting summary reports on engagement conversations, completing final reports on the project, and writing briefing material to inform the department and government partners.

The incumbent will work closely with all sectors of the Strategy, Support and Integrated Initiatives, other divisions within the Justice and Solicitor General, provincial ministries, other levels of government and a wide variety of community partners such as police services, fish and wildlife officers, provincial associations and community groups.

This position’s responsibilities and activities directly support the department’s Business Plan, goals in promoting safe community in Alberta and working in partnership with the other partners to support existing and develop new specialized courts and restorative justice initiatives.

Note: The incumbent can be based anywhere in Alberta, and a remote-work arrangement may be established based on the availability of local office workspace.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in social sciences or related areas and three years of relevant experience is required. Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

  • Knowledge of Aboriginal culture, beliefs and practices
  • Knowledge of immigration and settlement issues of New Canadians
  • Working knowledge of the criminal justice system and related legislation
  • Working knowledge of provincial and federal legislation related to policing
  • Extensive knowledge in theories/practices related to specialized courts and restorative justice
  • Knowledge of government contract and grant management best practices
  • Working knowledge of FOIP
  • Extensive knowledge of “best practices” in specialized courts and restorative justice
  • Working knowledge of specialized courts and restorative justice organizations/programs and serves available to Albertans
  • Working understanding of governments and departmental mandate, goals and priorities
  • Broad understanding of issues facing the departments/division/branch/unit
  • Working knowledge of GOA financial procedures
  • Working knowledge of Public Safety Canada’s mandate and goals
  • Branch and department reporting requirements
  • Working knowledge of alternate community funding sources/Provincial Service Agreements supporting community initiatives
  • Extensive knowledge of grant/contract management, monitoring, assessment and evaluation
  • Knowledge and application of statistical and research methodologies

Salary

$2,683.10 to $3,507.06 bi-weekly. ($70,028 to $91,534 annually)

Notes

Hours of work are 36.25 hrs/week. This position may end in one year or less.
