The Infrastructure Management team at the Department of Public Works has exciting new opportunities. We have changed the way we do business - bringing in more private sector approaches to managing our 50 office buildings, plus museums, courthouses, and other provincial infrastructure. We are focusing on life cycle asset management, innovative design thinking, energy efficiency, accessible buildings, using new digital technologies for asset management, and leading the industry by example. If you want to be part of a forward-thinking, collaborative environment, this may be the right opportunity for you.
As part of this collective goal, we have established a new Technical Engineering and Design Services Team responsible for the design and specifications used in the construction and maintenance of our existing Provincially owned Building Infrastructure. We have an exciting opportunity available for an Assistant Director role with this team.
About Our Opportunity
As the Assistant Director of Technical Engineering and Design Services, you will lead a team of senior professional staff that is responsible for the delivery of engineering and architectural designs, construction cost estimates, and inspection protocols to support the programs and work of the Infrastructure Management Division. You will also provide on-going design and engineering operations support to staff in the division.
Requirements of this position include providing overall leadership to the Technical Engineering and Design team to meet the needs of the Division for building forward-thinking design documents, drawings, specifications, procedures, information, and data that support the construction, maintenance and renovation work undertaken by the division. You will also contribute to the strategy and policy decisions of the Division and develop plans for initiatives to improve the performance of design, estimating and inspections, in support of the Division’s overall performance improvement objectives.
You will be responsible for the development of a long-term program of design work that supports the goals of the overall asset management plans of the division. This includes leading design work related to projects that will increase the energy efficiency of our government owned buildings across the province.

You have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or university degree in Architecture and several years of progressive leadership experience in design, capital planning and project development in a construction environment. - inspire creativity and are a visionary problem solver;
- are an effective communicator who analyzes and presents information in a clear, concise manner;
- lead staff with compelling vision and integrity using a collaborative team approach;
- build effective relationships with diverse clients and stakeholders.
You must have demonstrated success in leading and supporting multi-disciplinary teams or projects. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, and quickly adapt to competing priorities, contentious issues, and challenging deadlines.
You are highly collaborative and you energize your team to strive towards achieving successful project outcomes; exemplifying the Department’s values in all aspects of your work.
Leadership competencies required at this level of work are: Decisiveness, Strategic Orientation, Developing Others, Team Leadership, Self-Awareness and Personal Impact, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.
We offer you a wide range of benefits such as Health, Dental, Life Insurance, Pension, General Illness (Short and Long Term), Vacation and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.
This position will spend the majority of the time in an office setting but there will be occasionally some travel required for site visits and field work.
