KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Maintenance Shop Supervisor reports to the Public Works Superintendent and this position
is responsible for all aspects of fleet maintenance and manages a multi-trades workforce
engaged in maintenance and repair of municipal fleet vehicles and repair services.

DUTIES AND TASKS

Provides direction to Mechanics and Supervisors on overall turn-around time of all
aspects of fleet maintenance 

Identify training requirements and develop a skills matrix for maintenance staff while
providing guidance and mentorship on day-to-day shop operations 

Manage the day-to-day operations of the Public Works maintenance shop including but
not limited to management of staff, effective leadership and complaint resolution in a
unionized work environment. 

Work closely with the Superintendent and Public Works Directors for the management
of fleet and equipment, CVSE inspection facility and preventative maintenance program 

Provide support in the management of the mechanical shop and overall fleet
management. 

Support the interpretation, application and administration of collective agreement 1050
and on the handling of union grievances


Consult with Director of Public Works Operations concerning appropriate disciplinary
action of employees if required 

Determine operational priorities in consultation with Public Works Superintendent 

Maintenance Shop Supervisor will provide vacation and leave coverage for other
management staff in the Public Works department as directed. 

Liaise with other middle managers to resolve inter-departmental issues 
Assist in the development, preparation and monitoring of operating and capital budgets 

Monitor financial performance, taking prompt action to avoid problems 
Ensure assets and inventory are properly managed, used, stored and accounted for 

Maintain a daily diary of activity reports, logs and maintenance information. Ensure that
these diaries are kept current and stored safely for future reference. 

Responsible for fleet insurance 

Maintain a supportive working relationship with the public and staff to resolve issues
and concerns. 

Act with independence within policy guidelines, legislation and contract. 

Perform other related tasks as required. 

Willing to participate in Public Works on-call rotation

QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Experience, and Qualifications

At a minimum, applicants must have the following qualifications, skills and abilities:

  • BC Trades Qualification (Commercial Transport/Heavy Duty Mechanics/Red Seal
Automotive)
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive supervisory experience, preferably in a
unionized local government setting.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience covering a wide variety of vehicles and equipment
  • CVSE – Facility operators course certificate, preferred
  • Commercial Transport Inspection Certificate with air endorsement (preferred)
  • Landfill Operations Basics and Manager of Landfill Operations certifications *
(willing to obtain)
  • Demonstrated experience in employee relations, planning, project management,

budgeting and administrative management with knowledge in Public Works
operations

  • Class 3 BC Driver's License with air endorsement (preferred)
  • Clean driver’s abstract is required
  • Working knowledge of Computer programs (e.g. excel and outlook)
  • Laptop ability on Cummins, Kenworth and Freightliner is an asset
  • Have experience with diesel engine and electronic trouble shooting is an asset
  • Must maintain physical fitness level required to perform the duties required
  • Must be in compliance with the City’s mandatory Vaccination Policy
  • Candidates without certifications will be considered if willing to obtain these
certifications and possess appropriate experience
