Job Summary: Reporting to a Digital Services Assistant Manager, the incumbent provides service to the public, meeting established Library strategic objectives and service standards. Demonstrates and models conduct that adheres to the library's policies and procedures in accordance with the Library's vision, mission and values. The incumbent is a professional member of the Digital Services team who works collaboratively within the team and system wide to ensure service priorities are met.


The incumbent will help shape VPL's online presence through the administration of VPL.ca and the Library's microsites, with a focus on user experience and web development. They will also contribute to online engagement activities, including social media, and work collaboratively with the entire Digital Services team to ensure that our websites, in-house and licensed collections provide a seamless and positive user experience, that the public is digitally engaged with our services and collections, and to support the online delivery or services.


The incumbent will work closely with the staff in Library Systems, Marketing and Communications, Brand Heads and the Assistant Managers in Information Services and Programming and Learning to ensure our websites and social media activity are relevant and responsive to our patrons' needs.


Job Requirements:


Education/Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school
  • Specific coursework or professional development activities related to web development, human-computer interaction and user experience.

Experience:

  • Experience in the provision of library services including programming, information services, working with the community and collection management.
  • Demonstrated experience with web services, including an understanding of the planning, design, development, promotion and maintenance of websites.
  • Experience gathering and documenting business, functional, and end user requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to successfully develop and deliver effective user experiences.
  • Experience in a web development environment.
  • Experience developing interesting and engaging content for websites, blogs and social media.
  • Experience with information architecture issues, the organization and labeling of websites, taxonomy development and classification.
  • Experience with project management processes, principles and practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Thorough knowledge of the broader technological environment, including current and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to modify and troubleshoot web layout, design and functionality issues in a development environment using current web coding languages such as HTML, PHP and CSS.
  • Ability to configure modules and plug-ins for common web platforms such as Wordpress and Drupal.
  • Strong understanding of user-centred design principles, processes and methodologies, and demonstrated ability to apply these to web development projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of the web development cycle, including gathering requirements, design, development, testing and evaluation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleague, stakeholders across the organization and external partners.
  • Ability to convey complex and technical information in clear and jargon-free language.
  • Ability to experiment with new technologies, learn quickly, and teach others.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible and future-oriented in a dynamic team environment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of librarianship.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods involved in providing library services and ability to apply the same.
  • Working knowledge of the objectives, organization, procedures, services and resources of the library.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with both internal and external partners. Ability to plan, organize and carry out assigned duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to meet the public, promote interest in library services, assist library patrons, and interpret and explain library policies and regulations.
  • Ability to provide advice and direction to non-professional staff engaged in web-related technical duties
