Our Internship program offers paid 18-month internships for new grads interested in a career in municipal public service. The program provides training, development, and on-the-job experience for candidates that have graduated within the last 24 months.

We are inviting applications for the 18-month term position of ServiceNow Application Development Intern in Service Management & Operations. This is a bargaining unit position. In the event that there are no qualified NSUPE candidates, external applicants will be considered.

The Intern Program is designed to provide experiential learning and maximum professional exposure to interns in their chosen field of study while exploring the benefits of working for the municipality. Reporting to the Manager Business Solutions and Testing, the ServiceNow Application Development Intern provides best practice expertise in application design patterns, application development, systems integration, testing, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement support and technical documentation for the ServiceNow platform.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Research industry best practices for software development, current technologies, and their suitability in the HRM environment; remain current with state-of-the-art development and technology trends
  • Adhering to software design patterns, application lifecycle management and software development lifecycle requirements, as well as established ITIL processes and project management practices:
    • Review and provide guidance to others regarding software design and development to provide a standardized platform for ServiceNow request items
    • Recommend and enhance technical or operational policies, procedures, standards related to system application programming
    • Prepare technical documentation such as entity relationship diagrams, application flow diagrams, use cases, user guides, test plans, and maintenance procedures, adhering to corporate asset management standards, policies, and procedures
    • Support design, development, implementation and maintenance of custom forms and workflows using ServiceNow, as well as third-party application software, interfaces, and integrations
  • Support business analysts and other key stakeholders with the review/recommendation process for systems solutions based on business and technical requirements
  • Assists Application Administrator with functional documentation and training material regarding process flows and proper use of applications and systems
  • Participates in the development of non-functional requirements and integration architecture
  • Provides input into SLA’s with vendors as requested
  • May perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
  • Must be scheduled to graduate in May/June of 2022 or be a recent graduate (within the last 24 months) of a recognized or legally authorized college or university with a degree, post-graduate diploma, certificate, or diploma in Computer Science, Data Information/Management, or related field
  • To be eligible for the internship, candidates must have graduated within the last 24 months or be confirmed to graduate in June 2022 from a recognized or legally authorized university or community college
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada at time of application and maintain this status for the duration of the term
  • We value non-traditional experience and candidates are encouraged to outline in their application any student leadership, volunteering, extra-curricular, or community-based experience they possess
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated an interest in public policy or government administration and to those with ITIL Foundations Certification and/or development-related certifications
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of industry best practices, n-tier application architecture and design patterns, and the software development lifecycle
  • Familiarity with variety of programming and scripting languages (E.g., SQL, .NET, Java, PHP, JavaScript, Python, Drupal, R, etc.)
  • Familiarity with relational databases and standards (E.g., SQL, MySQL, Oracle)
  • Demonstrated knowledge in developing applications for various platforms (E.g., Windows/.NET, Linux/ Unix, Web platforms for browsers, native Mobile applications, ETL, Web Services, GIS, Windows Services, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ITIL best practices and project management technologies
  • Ability to create system design specifications, application architecture specifications and hardware requirement specifications from captured business requirements, functional and non-functional requirements, and security requirements
  • Ability to produce entity relationship diagrams, application flow diagrams, UML, and use case documentation
  • Familiarity with Business Process Re-engineering (and/or related e.g., Six Sigma), and Business Process Modeling/Mapping
  • Familiarity with various operating systems including Windows, Unix, Solaris, and Linux
  • Working knowledge of office productivity applications (Ex. Microsoft Office)
  • Excellent listening skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form with a wide variety of audiences
  • Strong logic, analysis, and problem-solving skills

WORK STATUS: Term 18 months, NSUPE Local 13 position

HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm; 35 hours per week

SALARY: $50,000 per year

WORK LOCATION: 13th Fl Barrington Tower
