Full Description
Under the direct supervision of the Safety Coordinator, the Safety Technician 1 provides technical assistance to line management/supervision in the areas of hazard assessment, safety training, safety inspections, and accident investigations. This position also assists Safety Technician 2’s with various enquiries, reports and other safety related activities.
As the Safety Technician 1 you will:
- Assist with/conduct work site inspections.
- Monitor compliance with workplace safety and health regulations, Department safety policies/directives, and safe work procedures.
- Assist in presenting education and training on all aspects of safety, safe work procedures and safety requirements.
- Assist with/conduct environmental monitoring of designated Department facilities, work sites, etc.
- Maintain and ensure accurate record keeping on health and safety related information and documentation.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as assigned.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 / GED.
- Completion of a minimum of one third of the credit courses and continued enrolment in a Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent program.
- 1 year of workplace safety and health related experience.
- Experience operating a variety of safety and health testing equipment
- Experience working with Microsoft Office programs, and various software databases and spreadsheet applications.
- Experience with occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work such as construction, landscaping, pesticide/herbicide application, temporary traffic control, arbourculture, and others.
- Knowledge of workplace safety and health principles and practices.
- Ability to assist with and deliver safety and health training and related presentations.
- Ability to plan and coordinate the work of staff assigned to projects as needed.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Conditions of employment:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence.
- Must be able and willing to work evenings, nights and weekends, as required.
- The successful applicant will be required to provide a vehicle for transportation while on City business, subject to the terms and conditions of the City Transportation Policy.
- Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position in all weather conditions.
- The successful applicant will be required to work in confined areas and hazardous locations. The successful candidate may be exposed to noxious odours, gas, dust, noise and adverse weather conditions. The wearing of various types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required as determined by the nature of an assignment.
