About Our Opportunity


The economist provides specialized professional economic analysis for the Department as well as internal and external clients. The economist is specifically responsible for collecting and analyzing economic and social statistics as well as for preparing economic impact analysis of government investments and policy decisions.


The economist delivers analysis of economic and social conditions in the province that are comprehensive, timely, reliable and accurate. These services support decision-making by government’s senior management, particularly in the development and delivery of the provincial budget, provision of government assistance or investments and implementation of fiscal and economic policies.


This position reports to the Senior Economist.

Primary Accountabilities


The Economist primary accountabilities also provides analysis through written publications, briefing notes, reports as well as through response to direct phone and email inquiries.

Qualifications and Experience


To be successful in this role you have a bachelor’s degree plus two years related experience or a bachelor’s degree (Honours) plus one-year related experience or a Master’s degree. Your degree should be in a relevant concentration such as economics, statistics, or mathematics. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.


You must be knowledgeable in econometric analysis, input-output modelling, analysis of current statistics and cost benefit analysis techniques as well as the current context for the economies of Canada and Nova Scotia. Your application should explain how you meet these requirements.


Working knowledge of the Nova Scotia Statistics Act, Federal Statistics Act and Finance Act would be considered an asset.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

This is a term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of October 23, 2023. The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: PR 10 - PR 13

Salary Range: $2,588.45 - $2,913.59 Bi-Weekly
