About Us


The Legal Services Division of the Department of Justice is the government’s law office, responsible for the provision of all legal services (excluding prosecutions) to the Province of Nova Scotia. Legal Services Division is accountable for providing legal services on a broad range of matters to the Government and many of its boards, agencies and commissions. The Legal Services Division is committed to providing students and co-op’s with an experience in which the educational component is of paramount importance.

About Our Opportunity


Co-op students are responsible for providing effective and efficient legal support to the solicitors of the Legal Services Division. Responsibilities include administrative duties, preparation of legal documents and correspondence, conducting research, record and process documentation, adhere to policies and processes and maintain filing systems.


Excellent research, analytical and organizational skills are required along with the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, orally and in writing, and the ability to function with a minimum of supervision in a team environment.


Qualifications and Experience


The applicant must be a full-time student registered in a co-operative education program and returning to school in Fall 2022. Enrolment in a course of study related to law or business administration will be preferred .


Your key skills include attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to work under pressure and deadlines. You are also required to display strong interpersonal and communication skills.


In this position, you are required to have experience and competency in a computerized environment and the Co-op ability to take into consideration all current legislation and regulations, and ensure court procedures, timelines and government policies are followed.

Working Conditions


  • May be required to work overtime on occasion.
  • Dynamic legal office environment sitting in a modular desk unit with 2 colleagues in same general area.
  • Considerable periods of time sitting at desk interspersed with movement to and from printers, file storage areas or to deposit/retrieve mail. At times, required to bend and lift file boxes from storage shelving and transport to review area.
  • Regular need to read and analyze information and significant time focusing on a computer monitor.
  • Must balance multiple priorities and the demand for accuracy and attention to detail in the preparation of legal documents requires acute concentration and for some may increase physical and mental stress.
  • The nature of the work in some files may exposes staff to disturbing images or content.
