The Library Services Assistant 3 - Makerspace works under the general supervision of the Section Head in Millennium Library’s ideaMill, which is a unique space for customers to learn, create, collaborate and discover. The position assists in the provision of programs and services in the makerspace, and works with a variety of customers (adults, young adults, families, children and specialized groups such as newcomers, seniors, and those with special needs) who are interested in makerspace technology and programs. The position requires a unique depth of technological know-how coupled with exceptional customer service skills and an enthusiasm for building the digital literacy of the community.

As the ideaMILL Assistant, you will:

  • Assist customers in-person, over the telephone, and online.
  • Assist customers in the use of software and digital services available in the makerspace.
  • Assist users with the hardware and peripherals (computers, printers, 3D printers, sound equipment, scanners, photocopiers, sewing machines, and a variety of power tools) available in the makerspace.
  • In consultation with the Idea Mill Section Head, prepare, deliver/facilitate, and market programs for the makerspace that align with the maker philosophy of creating, sharing, learning and collaborating.
  • In consultation with the Idea Mill Section Head, handle the booking of programs and class visits, and provide makerspace orientation sessions, tours, and digital literacy programming for schools and community organizations as required.
  • Assist customers with a variety of technical issues, such as:
  • connecting personal portable devices to the library’s wireless network
  • retrieving/storing data in files on portable devices or to web-based storage options
  • questions and troubleshooting relating to the installation of apps and other software on their personal devices
  • Assist customers with common Library resources/tools, such as the Library’s online public access catalogue (OPAC), online databases, Internet resources, and Library Online Computer Booking system as required.
  • Instruct users on how to access library resources on their personal devices, including smart phones, tablets, laptops and e-readers

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Undergraduate degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the maker philosophy and its connection to library services.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent client-centered customer service.
  • Strong commitment to public service and the promotion of library programs and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver technology-based training and presentations.
  • Ability to analyze public enquiries and to deal with the public effectively.
  • Exceptional ability to learn on the job and effectively apply learning to new technologies, hardware, software and platforms.
