The Opportunity

The City of St. John’s is seeking lawyer to join its team providing legal advice and services to Council and staff for a six month temporary contract. The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for all aspects of real property acquisitions and divestitures by and on behalf of the City of St. John’s, and such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Accountabilities

Reporting to the City Solicitor, the successful candidate must be able to build relationships and inspire confidence in interactions with Council, Staff, and other stakeholders. The primary areas of responsibility for this position will include reviewing and drafting corporate and commercial documents in relation to real estate and civil litigation files, as well as providing general advice to Council and staff on a variety of matters. The successful candidate will also be required to represent the City at Provincial Court and all other levels of Court in addition to appearing at administrative tribunals, hearings, boards, committees, etc.

The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications

The successful applicant will have a LL.B or J.D from a recognized Canadian law school; be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador; and have a minimum of five (5) years experience with a primary focus on residential and commercial real estate practice. A working knowledge of real property valuation methodology and values in the St. John’s area would be an asset. Experience with a public sector environment from a real estate practice would be an asset.

Must be a person of integrity and sound judgement who is able to work independently and within a team environment; with proven ability to work under strict deadlines. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, analytical, and organizational skills combined with solid time management, computer and research abilities. The successful applicant must have a strong background, and demonstrate expertise, in all areas of real property law.

Monday - Friday
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
