The Ministry of Corrections and Policing is accepting applications for Permanent Part-Time Mental Health Correctional Officers at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford. Mental Health Correctional Officers are positive, motivated, and energetic role models that are non-judgmental and have excellent communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills. Mental Health Correctional Officers are responsible and accountable, exhibit leadership, embrace diversity and equality, and treat everyone with dignity and respect.

Role of a Mental Health Correctional Officer:

  • Work closely with adult offenders who may have special needs, gender differences and various cultural and spiritual belief systems;
  • Manage a caseload of adult offenders, applying various counselling methodologies including addressing criminogenic factors and their relationship to human behaviour;
  • Establish, build, and maintain work relationships with effective interpersonal communication; (both written and verbal)
  • Appropriately apply policy, procedures and legislation;
  • Be responsible for the security of adult offenders in different correctional settings;
  • Maintain a level of fitness to meet the requirements of a physically-demanding work environment; and
  • Be available for shift work.

Ideal Candidate

Becoming a Mental Health Correctional Officer requires a combination of knowledge, skills, and attributes which includes:

  • Knowledge of criminal justice system;
  • Knowledge of human behaviour and interpersonal communications to support positive change from an informed perspective;
  • The ability to solve problems using good judgement while following appropriate policy procedures;
  • Knowledge, skills, and attributes of the social sciences, correctional services, or similar discipline.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • A collaborative and supportive team player;
  • Proficiency with various computer systems or programs;
  • A commitment to ongoing learning and continuous improvement;
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s licence;
  • First Aid CPR/AED; and
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time you apply for a position.

Physical Requirements

The Corrections Officers Physical Abilities Test (COPAT) is a timed physical abilities test that is comprised of activities designed to reflect the physical challenges faced in a corrections environment.

The COPAT is mandatory and must be successfully completed during the assessment period.

Evaluations and Assessments

Candidates who successfully complete the screening process will be placed in a qualified pool for the facility (or facilities) they expressed interest. As opportunities become available, candidates will be drawn from the pool, provided an offer of employment and invited to attend the Induction Training Program.
