The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables manages and promotes energy and mineral resources to achieve optimum economic, social, and environmental value from these sectors. The Subsurface Energy Development Branch of the Department provides leadership, strategic direction, research, and innovation for building subsurface energy regimes in onshore and offshore Nova Scotia. Subsurface energy responsibilities include establishing resource and economic potential for development while ensuring responsible resource stewardship. The Department manages these resources through legislation, regulations, market assessments, and cross-jurisdiction relationships for energy development.


About Our Opportunity


As the Geologist 3 you will provide expertise in Geophysics to advance Nova Scotia’s economic, social, and environmental goals.


Primary Accountabilities


Some of the primary accountabilities in this role include:

  • Planning, conducting and reporting on specialized independent geophysics research and/or providing technical geoscience specialization for the creation, maintenance and dissemination of geoscientific data and sample collections to clients.
  • Creating and managing one or more annual project plans including creating and reporting on the project.
  • Advising, consulting with and providing geoscience, technical and regulatory expertise to management, government/intergovernmental departments, agencies, committees, academia, and industry associations.
  • Presenting scientific papers and technical expertise on programs to various audiences.
  • Attending appropriate geotechnical meetings, conferences, workshops and seminars.

In this role you will report to the Manager, Subsurface Energy and Development.


Qualifications and Experience


This may be a right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor of Science in area of earth and geosciences plus 5 years of related experience; or a Master’s in Science plus 4 years of related experience; or a Doctorate plus 2 years of related experience.


Specific geoscience expertise must include but is not limited to proficiency in the Petrel Geophysical and Petrophysical software, has excellent communication skills, experience in offshore subsea survey planning for geophysical surveys and remote and autonomous vehicles.


You have strong knowledge and skills in reflection seismic, AVO analysis, 2D and 3D seismic reprocessing, familiarity working with sonar and multibeam data and be able to integrate their interpretations to the geological information, such as but not limited to, tectonics, biostratigraphy, geochemistry and rock physics. Proficient in GIS and statistical modelling as it relates to resource estimate and prospectivity is a must.


Considered assets of background and experience are structural geology, sedimentology, geographic information systems, integrated resource management and geoscientific editing. The incumbent should be eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Nova Scotia.

Pay Grade: PR 15 - PR 15

Salary Range: $2,588.45 - $3,155.27 Bi-Weekly
