Job Summary:

The incumbent is responsible for receiving, evaluating, prioritizing and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio calls as well as dealing with various alarms.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive, evaluate, prioritize and dispatch telephone and radio calls.

  • Maintain radio contact with fire staff during incidents including relaying requests for additional resources.

  • Monitor the movement of fire resources.

  • Communicate and coordinate fire and EMS activities with other agencies.

  • Maintain accurate records.

  • Provide administrative support including maintaining volunteer hours, staff training records and preparing reports.

  • Train staff as required on fire dispatch activities.

  • Assist with custodial and light maintenance to fire hall and grounds.

  • Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.

  • Other related duties.

Job Requirements:

Working Conditions:

Majority of the work is performed under normal office conditions. High level of concentration required during incidents with multiple radios and telephone calls occurring simultaneously. Exposure to dirt, oil, diesel fumes, noise and/or weather variations when performing traffic control for returning apparatus.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Emergency Communications and Response certificate or ability to obtain within six months

  • 2 years related experience and 6 months on the job training.

  • Standard First Aid including level C CPR (16 hours)

  • Geographical knowledge of the City (streets, major buildings, complexes, etc.)

  • Ability to work and maintain accuracy under pressure, attention to details and meet critical deadlines

  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment with little supervision

  • Strong client service orientation and good interpersonal skills

  • Good organizational and multi-tasking skills

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Communications equipment including emergency phone system, radios and paging equipment, alarm monitoring systems, electronic log book, radio/pager dispatch system, etc. General office equipment including computer skills to operate software programs related to word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, etc.

Other Details:

Note: The City of Whitehorse requires that all employees be fully vaccinated from COVID-19 by February 20, 2022. Employees will be considered to be fully vaccinated 14 days after they have received both doses of a vaccine approved by Health Canada that requires two doses to complete the vaccination series. The City’s definition of full vaccination may change and any such change will be informed by direction from the Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) and public health authorities.
