This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Gjoa Haven only.

Reporting to the Supervisor Health Programs, the Clerk Interpreter provides professional and responsive confidential translation and facilitation support services between patients/clients and the health services team. This position impacts the public and the community at large as it is the key entry point for health services, patient complaints, referral and information services. As a result, the position requires a good knowledge of Inuktitut and/or Inuinnaqtun as well as English, both written and spoken. In addition, the role also provides one of the main Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun speaking resources for the regional office.

The Clerk Interpreter deals with Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun speaking clients and agencies; greets staff and patients to ensure comfort to reduce anxiety by providing a welcoming and friendly environment, collects relevant patient information; facilitates conversations between clients/family and health care providers to ensure language and culture are integrated into the treatment process where appropriate; interprets and explains to patients and their families, medical treatments that are to be carried out, medications and patient care instructions, reassuring patients in their own language; assist medical staff by preparing patient and assisting in examinations, escorting them to other areas for tests or procedures or other activities as directed by medical staff; carries out routine preparatory activities as directed by supervising health staff; provides simple comfort and assistance with hygienic measures; contacts patients for follow-up appointment and activities; visit clients off-site with health care providers to facilitate conversation regarding treatment; keeps supply and examination areas tidy, including cleaning areas and restocking supply cabinets; and promotes health and wellness in the community.

The incumbent should have completed Grade 10 with one year (1) of interpreting/translating experience. May require a valid driver’s license in some locations.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
