The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Crop Sector Development Branch as a Crop Specialist, in Fredericton.

As a member of the Crop Sector Development Branch and reporting to the section Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for working specifically with the Tree Fruit, Ornamental Greenhouse, Nursery and Landscape Sectors, including developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies, programs, and initiatives to strengthen these sectors. Responsibilities will include the following: working with industry stakeholders and departmental staff to improve competitiveness and address development issues; keeping up to date on new production methods, new pest management methods, beneficial management practices, research and emerging technologies; promoting sustainable growth within the sectors; providing advice to the Department, Provincial Government and other Agencies regarding current and evolving issues; conducting and coordinating research projects; understanding certification programs related to product grading and food safety; working in collaboration with regional staff and other provincial specialists; representing New Brunswick on regional and national committees. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Master's degree in Science with specialization in agriculture or a related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience in agricultural crop development; OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in Science with specialization in agriculture or a related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience in agricultural crop development.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: apple or other tree fruit production practices; greenhouse/nursery production of ornamentals; landscaping practices; field research trials and demonstrations; on-farm technology transfer; working with producers and producer groups. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel within and outside of the province as required; participate in regional and national meetings; possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

SALARY: $61,988.42 to $84,845.80 per annum

NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.
