POSITION SUMMARY: *Under the general supervision of the Co-ordinator - Convention & Visitor Services and the technical direction and guidance of the Senior Travel Counsellor, provides tourist-related information relative to Thunder Bay to visitors attending the Information Centre.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: *

  • Provides tourist-related information to visitors attending the Information Centre.
  • Act as the primary e-mail contact for tourism-related inquires; responds to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Develops and maintains a tourism business directory to facilitate the distribution of ongoing tourist-related information.
  • In consultation with the Partnership Marketing Officer, prepares and distributes a scheduled e-newsletter and updates information on the Tourism website including the Tourism calendar, as required.
  • Maintains a daily record of Information Centre visitors.
  • Receives, date stamps, and sorts incoming mail; prepares outgoing mail and volume mailings.
  • Prepares bulk information kits and individual VIP kits; maintains a record and advises the supervisor regarding the receipt of bulk information.
  • Performs good housekeeping practices in Information Centre and storage areas.
  • Maintains daily inventory of all brochures, replenishing inventory as required.
  • Assists in keying of data entry for the Division.
  • Performs the duties of the Senior Travel Counsellor during absences.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: *

Education/Experience:

  • Secondary school graduation together with post-secondary courses in travel/tourism or recreation; or
  • Two years’ recent experience working in a visitor information centre or within the Tourism industry
  • Current knowledge of local tourism products and offerings in Thunder Bay and area is required

Skills/Abilities: *

  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, co-workers and the general public
  • Must be at a basic skill level in word processing software and must possess basic on-line data entry skills

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: *

  • Required to wear a departmental uniform
  • Must be willing and able to work shift work
