Director, Communications, Stakeholder & Government Affairs

Position Description

The Tourism Industry Association of Alberta (TIAA) seeks a Director, Communications, Stakeholder & Government Affairs to join our growing team. TIAA is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to more than double the value and contribution of Alberta’s visitor economy by 2030. The association advocates on behalf of all segments of Alberta’s tourism economy for a competitive and sustainable business environment that generates substantial economic value for the province.

The Director, Communications, Stakeholder & Government Affairs will assist TIAA expand its policy issues reach, ensure responsiveness to emerging business concerns and see to it that timely and informative communications support the business and future planning efforts of its members.

Core Responsibilities:

Communications

  • Serve as TIAA media spokesperson on selected issues files
  • Media releases – provide timely and responsive outreach to print, radio and media outlets to ensure TIAA’s messages are delivered in a timely, and professional manner
  • Prepare speeches & presentation decks for the board advisor, or board chair, to support TIAA’s outreach and advocacy aims
  • Opinion editorials – craft compelling content to support TIAA’s policy and advocacy aims
  • Bi-weekly newsletter – curate, write, edit and distribute timely content that aligns to the needs of Alberta’s tourism and hospitality sector
  • Develop, distribute and interpret the results from member-based surveys and opinion polls
  • Work with a contracted 3rd party to produce an Annual State of the Industry Report that considers current market conditions, trends, forecasts and policy issues to be considered in the advancement of the industry’s growth goals.
  • To inform the content of the Annual State of the Industry report, work with a contracted 3rd party to produce a comprehensive Annual Business Conditions Survey, ensuring a strong response from businesses across various segments of the tourism and hospitality industry.
  • TIAA Year in Review Report – write, design, edit & publish the association’s annual performance report card to members
  • Website – working with TIAA’s Membership & Administration Coordinator, ensure new and refreshed website content to support the association’s key messages
  • Social Media – manage the timing, tone and content of TIAA messaging through select social media channels

Stakeholder Affairs

· Industry Associations Advisory Council (members) – generate agendas, minutes, reports and facilitate the advancement of the shared aims arising from semi-annual IAAC meetings

  • Tourism Regional Roundtables – work with TIAA Administration to coordinate a series of regional roundtable meetings ensuring presentation content and background materials are suited to each audience based on a current assessment of their needs
  • Support the ongoing aims of TIAA’s Data Insights Strategy, working with 3rd party contractor, sector associations and Travel Alberta to ensure timely analysis and interpretation of sector data
  • Work with TIAA’s Membership & Administrative Coordinator to ensure member relationships are maintained and that efforts to cultivate new members are supported

· Build collaborative partnerships with tourism sector associations, destination marketing organizations, Travel Alberta and others

Government Affairs

· Manage a suite of policy issues identified within the association’s business plan and be responsive to emerging issues as they arise, providing context and a range of response options

· Draft policy and budget submissions to provincial and federal ministries to advance TIAA’s business aims

· Develop and maintain relationships with key government officials and elected representatives who help to steward the interests of Alberta’s visitor economy

· Assist with the organization and guidance of a TIAA Policy Committee and identify and advance timely policy issues to be considered by the association’s board of directors

· Build a government relations strategy to help advance the goals and objectives reflected in TIAA’s annual business plans

Qualifications / Required Skills

  • 10+ years senior communications, government affairs and stakeholder engagement experience, ideally in a member-driven, trade association environment
  • demonstrated understanding of issues facing Alberta’s visitor economy and the structure and players involved at the provincial level, and federal (preferred)
  • self-starter, natural relationship builder and accountable for setting and meeting goals
  • proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • website and social media experience (content development, and systems administration)
  • strong computer skills (eg. MS Office Suite, Acrobat, InDesign, etc..)
  • experience setting and managing budgets/reporting on variances
  • willingness to travel as needed

Position Time Commitment

0.5 to 0.6 FTE in 2022, growing to a 1.0 FTE in 2023
