About Us


The Adult Education Division of Nova Scotia's Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration is dedicated to improving the education and employment prospects of Nova Scotia's adults by promoting, developing and funding adult literacy, essential skills, and upgrading programs in the province.


The division administers the following programs: Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning, General Educational Development (GED), Recognition of Prior Learning, and Labour Mobility.


About Our Opportunity


The Adult Education Coordinator (AEC) is responsible for the coordination and administration of Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning (NSSAL) programs and services in the Valley region of Nova Scotia. The AEC works directly with NSSAL service providers in the region to develop and manage all aspects of their funding agreements ensuring quality delivery of programs and accountability for the funding received.


The AEC is the first point of contact for any issues or opportunities that may arise regarding adult learning programming and works closely with stakeholders to resolve these issues or pursue new initiatives.


This position reports directly to the Manager.

Primary Accountabilities


  • Administers, coordinates, and leads the Cape Breton Regional Planning Team meeting which consists of NSSAL service providers and other organizations and stakeholders who work with clients who may benefit from adult learning programs.
  • Works as part of a team in all activities within the Adult Education Division and other Divisions within the Skills and Learning Branch.
  • Supports the development of policies, provides analysis and strategic advice, and makes recommendations to management to ensure effective program delivery, office operations, and service to the public.
  • Participates on, and/or leads, working groups and provides project management oversight.

Qualifications and Experience


Bachelor's Degree in a related field, plus 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience. The AEC will have experience in program and project development and management as well as experience in a leadership role with various stakeholders. The AEC will also have knowledge of education and adult education principles and demonstrated experience in adult education practices.


Excellent interpersonal, written communication, budgeting, public speaking, and presentation skills, along with the ability to demonstrate good judgement, strategic thinking, and effective decision-making skills are necessary. Exceptional problem-solving, and organizational skills are necessary and the ability to adapt to change is essential. Strong negotiation skills are required to resolve regional issues and to develop new partnerships and programs. Proficiency with general office software is required, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the internet.


The following skills and experience are considered assets:


  • Highly developed skills in proposal assessment and making well considered recommendations for funding.
  • Knowledge of regional learning needs and gaps in service.
  • Experience in providing information, advisement and making referrals to the public.
  • Knowledge about GED, the NS High School Graduation Diploma for Adults and NSSAL service providers.
  • Previous experience delivering presentations, chairing meetings and/or coordinating projects.

Pay Grade: PR 13

Salary Range: $2,396.86 - $2,913.59 Bi-Weekly
