TechGirls Canada is the hub for Canada’s women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). We are a not-for-profit organization conducting social and scientific research in the area of women's labour market participation in STEM fields. We collaborate with artists and communities to present our findings in beautiful, accessible, and compelling ways. The Opportunity

The Research and Policy Analyst works closely with the Program Manager and Lead Investigator(s) to ensure TGC program and project outcomes are documented in clear, compelling, and evidence-based artifacts (e.g. reports, presentations, audio and video outputs, as needed). We want to hear from candidates with demonstrated experience in conducting social research, data analysis, and policy evaluation. The role is responsible for gathering, synthesizing, evaluating, summarizing, and sharing insights based on program/project objectives - with the overall goal of supporting TGC’s team in developing and helping implement our research findings.   • Full time, contract position (renewable yearly on mutual agreement and availability of funding)
  • Contract start: December 2021
  • Salary commensurate with experience: $55,000 - $65,000 per annum, plus an additional $10,000 annual cost-of-living allowance if applicant resides in the North (NWT, YT, NU)

Responsibilities

Research and Analysis:

  • Develops, implements, manages, and reports on an Annual Work Plan for the Research Analyst position based on organizational, program, and project objectives
  • Prepares fact sheets, position statements, policy briefs, reports and other documents with concrete recommendations to guide advocacy efforts for media, stakeholder engagement, government meetings, and standing committees based on internal and external data
  • Seeks out relevant data and research to inform and support advocacy for public perspective and policy change
  • Is responsible for specific program-related research deliverables including data collection, formulating reports, and making recommendations based upon research findings
  • Proactively scans and understands the latest socioeconomic news and developments relevant to labour matters, especially at the intersections of gender, race, ability, language, health, housing, isolation, access to critical services and market-related information
  • In collaboration with the Program Manager, produces monthly and quarterly reports for executive management audiences, summarizing analyses of on-going research on key priority topics
  • Builds and maintains a basic database of appropriately categorized contacts from various TGC initiatives and engagements
  • Undertakes jurisdictional and environmental scans to identify research trends and provide recommendations to support current and future research priorities
  • Reviews and extracts applicable evidence and best practices from published literature and peer reviewed sources for relevant research assignments and deliverables
  • Reaches out to other jurisdictions with progressive policy movements for lessons learned
  • Stays up to date on current government legislation and regulations as well as non-for-profit programs related to TGC’s sphere of engagement
  • Develops funding proposals in collaboration with the team
  • Supports completion of relevant grant applications (based on program development and delivery outcomes) to ensure organizational needs are addressed with future funding

Staff Support:

  • Increases the internal understanding of Canada’s STEM labour market, and related trends, outlook, performance, risks and opportunities, global context and connections, and legislation and policies through presentations and discussion
  • Provides strategic advice and assists in the development and implementation of the organization’s short and long-term goals and strategic plan
  • Participates in applicable working group meetings as needed
  • Contributes to project proposals, reports, and knowledge products, as directed
  • Develops Annual Work Plan for the Research Analyst role
  • Supports development of promotional and media content integrating research and findings in an accessible format, contributes to on-going planning and content creation for TGC’s communications calendar
  • Works with program personnel to bring effective approaches to program implementation
  • Provides input on the development of key organizational messages
  • Identifies opportunities to amplify advocacy efforts of women in STEM, our partners and allies, and other community organizations

Community and Partner Relations:

  • Focuses on building a collaborative network of relationships with representatives from all levels of government, STEM private sector associations, and TGC working groups
  • Participates in the development and delivery of papers and presentations for clients and stakeholders, including conferences and applicable journals
  • Participates in community-level stakeholder meetings and consultations as assigned by the President
  • Identifies community resources and collaborators to support organizational objectives

Qualifications & Skills

Must-have:

  • Post-secondary degree or comparable work experience in social sciences, communications, public policy, political science, gender studies, or other related field
  • Demonstrable experience in research, analysis, and reporting focused on community engagement, policy development, and/or non-profit communications
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and relationship building skills to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships
  • Practiced strategic thinking, research, and analytical skills
  • Fluent in English, demonstrable verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrable project management skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in effectively managing multiple tasks with high attention to detail
  • Resourcefulness, self-driven initiative, and flexibility to work well as part of a small team
  • Keen interest in qualitative and participatory research methodologies
  • Commitment to learning about new intersectional issues with humility and enthusiasm
  • Ability to work independently, and from a computer and phone most of the day
  • Demonstrated experience in building partnerships and collaborations across different industries

Very nice-to-have:

  • Bilingual proficiency in French, verbal and written skills
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in creating compelling reports in multimedia formats, and managing the logistics of pan-Canadian research
  • In-depth understanding of various social media platforms
  • Experience using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator
