About Our Opportunity


As an Administrative Assistant within the Agriculture & Food Operations branch of the Department of Agriculture, you will support the Manager and staff of the Animal Health Section of the branch. You will be integral to the overall effectiveness of the Section in the delivery of timely, professional client service in a division focused on the delivery of programs and services aimed at helping the agricultural industry in Nova Scotia grow and contribute to the economy.

Primary Accountabilities


Within this role, you can expect to provide a wide range of administrative, coordination and logistical support services including:


  • Front reception and sample receiving
  • Data entry and verification of lab data into a Laboratory Information Management System
  • Collation and preparation of data summaries
  • Handling of payments
  • Recording, verification and processing of financial documents/transactions
  • Maintaining inventory
  • Distribution of inter-office mail
  • Establishing and maintaining a comprehensive records management system

You will also work closely with another administrative assistant and staff to ensure effective client service is provided to the clients of the Animal Health Lab.

Qualifications and Experience


As the successful candidate, you will have 4 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position will require you to be proficient in computer application skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and data processing. Knowledge of budgeting, procurement practices, records management systems, financial activities and processes is essential.


As the successful candidate, you will also possess strong organizational, administrative and prioritization skills and be able to work independently with limited supervision and harmoniously as a team member in a busy, collaborative, client-centered environment. You will have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and tactfully respond to inquiries and to interact effectively with staff, clients, government officials and other stakeholders. Diplomacy, discretion and confidentiality are critical.


Knowledge and experience in government procedures, systems and processes such as procurement, STAR/STOR, ICTS Service desk, financial services, SAP systems, ARI fleet management, safety policies, etc. is considered an asset.

Pay Grade: CL 18

Salary Range: $1,579.09 - $1,766.79 Bi-Weekly
