Position Overview
GNS is an independent, co-educational school with a large day student population complemented by Family Homestay and Gryphon House boarding programs. Based out of the Pemberton Woods campus (Grades 6-12), the School Counsellor provides a robust counselling program that informs, educates and supports students and their families. The successful candidate will be a collaborative member of the school’s health team, which includes two other counsellors and a school nurse. The Counsellor provides a continuum of preventive, developmental, remedial and intervention services and programs within the school environment. Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, the School Counsellor supports student needs in all matters of mental health and wellness, seeking opportunities that will help students advocate for their own personal well-being.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaboratively plan with students, their families, teachers, administrators and community personnel to develop effective strategies to promote the educational, social, emotional, mental and behavioural health of GNS students;
  • Provide individual and group goal-oriented planning sessions to students in the areas of mental health, social/emotional development, family issues and making healthy choices.
  • Provide direct instruction to students in areas such as peer helping, conflict resolution, social skills and life skills.
  • Provide support to other educators in implementing health education and promoting a healthy school environment.
  • Support teachers with curriculum development and coordination of preventative curriculum through the use of guest speakers and workshops.
  • Collaborate with teachers, support staff and administration regarding the nature of students' strengths and needs, their educational implications, and ways to enhance learning and interpersonal relations.
  • Identify students’ diverse needs that require specific counselling expertise;
  • Incorporate family support for addressing student issues and provide referrals to appropriate community or private counselling agencies.
  • Stay up to date on emerging trends in the field by participating in professional development, reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, and establishing and maintaining contact with other professional bodies and social service agencies.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team, teachers and support staff to gather classroom-based data, design & implement instructional strategies or social supports, and design & implement behaviour management interventions.
  • Adhere to the ethical standards of the counselling profession and practice in accordance with federal, provincial and local laws, statutes, and/or policies that relate to students and families; such as, child protection/child abuse, special education, attendance, education rights and privacy;
  • Work with teachers to provide additional classroom supports as appropriate;
  • Promote a safe, inclusive and caring school environment;
  • Maintain some flexibility and be available to respond to emergencies and critical incidents.

Qualifications / Skills:
  • A Master’s Degree in School Counselling, Counselling Psychology or other relevant discipline
  • A member of (or ability to register with) a professional body such as Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association, BC Association of Clinical Counsellors or BC Association of Social Workers
  • Minimum five years of counselling experience with children and youth, preferably in an educational setting
  • Bachelor of Education degree and BC teaching certificate would be an asset but not required
  • Experience counselling children and youth with anxiety, depression and unique learning styles and needs
  • Experience working with children and youth individually and in group settings
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to establish connections, build trust and rapport with students and parents
  • A strong understanding of the social-emotional development of children
  • A strong understanding of strategies and resources needed to effectively deal with a variety of mental health issues
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully and professionally at all times
  • Must be highly collegial and a collaborative team member
  • Must be willing to participate fully in the culture of our independent school community
  • Previous experience working in an Independent, Boarding or International Baccalaureate school setting would be considered an asset
