Role

As Managing Director, you will report to the Alberta’s Senior Representative in the United States, and lead programs and initiatives and fulfill a crucial advocacy role to enhance Alberta’s profile, and position our key strategies in priority sectors, which include energy, agriculture, clean technology, life sciences and education sectors.



You will build and maintain international government and business relationships and provide expertise to industry sectors supporting incoming and outgoing advocacy missions, participating in key conferences and events to promote economic relations, bilateral trade and market access. Collaborating with provincial and federal partners, you will provide leadership, strategic direction, and coordination to the Alberta government’s efforts to protect and advance the province’s interests related to U.S. policy development, legislative measures, or administrative actions directly affecting many sectors of the Alberta economy. In providing leadership and direction to the Alberta office co-located with the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC, as well as other advocacy-focused offices in North America, you will apply diplomacy and network building skills as you work with dynamic companies, senior leaders, and federal staff to create and support advocacy, trade and investment wins for Alberta. This position requires frequent travel throughout the United States, and occasionally to Alberta and Mexico.

Qualifications

Your background includes related senior management experience working with domestic, intergovernmental and international stakeholders. You have an extensive working knowledge of international business, marketing principles and practices in relation to global business development and trade issues. Your extensive understanding of political landscapes in Alberta, Canada, the US, and Mexico, especially as they relate to Alberta’s energy and agricultural sectors is a key strength. You are a proven leader with superior communication, diplomacy skills, and political acumen. An ability to develop and maintain intergovernmental relationships, industry networks and strategic alliances will be critical in this role. Strong advocacy, consultation, mediation and negotiation skills will contribute to your success. A related degree is preferred.

Salary

$4,801.47 to $6,310.03 bi-weekly. ($125,318 - $164,691 / year); along with current applicable APS International Service provisions and relocation to Washington, DC (see Alberta Public Service International Service Guidelines (APSISG) Overview.) This is a four year temporary opportunity with a possibility of extension.
