Full Description

Renert School is one of Calgary's leading private schools. We run teaching and research labs at our school, most notably an iGEM lab.

We are looking for a lab technician and instructor to maintain the labs, lead labs with students Grades 10-12, and mark lab submissions. The ideal candidate will have a lot of experience of lab tech and instruction work in a college/university setting.

We expect the work hours to be 12-6pm daily, 4 days a week to start. This may expand over time.

  • Design and administer labs to high school students in Biology and Chemistry.
  • Mark students' lab reports using provided rubrics.
  • Provide feedback to students and answer their questions.
  • Oversee inventory and ordering of lab supplies.
  • Mark labs and provide feedback to students.
  • Review hazards and control risks related to the preparation of the labs and demonstrations
  • Label chemicals and solutions in accordance with current approved legislation
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, testing, and repairing of equipment
  • Stock shelves, and clean up after labs
  • Submit annual chemical inventory to the designated person responsible for hazardous materials
  • Adhere to safe work practices in the storage and disposal of hazardous wastes within the department
  • Work collaboratively with the department team to ensure proper cleaning, maintenance and functioning of science department spaces
  • Maintain an inventory of chemicals and equipment and ensure compliance with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Inform staff of WHMIS compliance initiatives and how to access chemical database
  • Submit annual chemical inventory to the designated person responsible for hazardous materials
  • Recommend safe work practices to students and assist in the safety training of students
  • Respond to emergency situations such as chemical spills

Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. in Biological Sciences and/or Chemistry with strong knowledge of both Biology and Chemistry (M.Sc. preferred)
  • At least 3 years of experience in lab work and lab instruction
  • Knowledgeable in the application of science laboratory skills
  • Must have current knowledge of the hazards associated with chemicals, and the appropriate disposal of chemical waste
  • Familiar with spreadsheets, electronic mail, internet searches, and comfortable with learning new technologies
  • Strong problem solving, multitasking, and time management skills
  • Love of children and the desire to introduce them to proper lab work
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to relate positively to students, staff, and suppliers
