R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) is currently seeking an Intermediate Inspector / Contract Administrator with a minimum of 5 years of civil construction, contract administration and client relationship management skills to join the Residential Development Group based in our Pickering office. This role requires an individual with an extensive civil field construction background as well as an in depth understanding of consultant roles and responsibilities.
The successful candidate will join a team that is involved in projects from coast to coast which include all types and sizes of development including: mixed use commercial retail and office buildings, shopping centres, future commercial developments/re-developments, industrial buildings and institutional buildings, as well as small multi building developments.
This role may involve some travel across Canada as well as to projects based in Ontario, including review and observation of construction projects, making decisions and ensuring the timely flow of information and decisions while travelling, to enable completion of the projects as required by the contract documents and our Clients development needs.
Role Specifics
The position will involve carrying out the following tasks, and includes:
- Site investigations and field inspection services for residential and site plan projects;
- Reviewing and commenting on constructability aspects of design drawings;
- Preparing tender and contract documents in support of design drawings;
- Assisting in contract negotiation and award processes;
- Understanding of municipal and provincial approvals, regulations and standards;
- Organizing and chairing project stake holder meetings;
- Conducting onsite survey & review and coordinating work with the client and contractor;
- Liaising with municipal and governing authorities as required in support of the contract;
- Preparing and issuing site inspection reports;
- Reviewing monthly contractor progress claims and issuing payment certificates;
- Reviewing, accessing and negotiating contractor change requests;
- Reviewing project as built information and assisting with letters of credit reduction; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Some evening and weekend work may be required to facilitate the inspection and administration requirements of assigned projects.
A valid driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle are mandatory in order to commute to project locations.
Qualified Candidates Should Have:
- A minimum of 5 years of civil construction and field inspection, contract administration and client relationship management experience.
- A diploma or education in a related discipline
- Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project and Outlook
- Ability to understand and interpret Contract Documents and Drawings
- Working knowledge of basic building code applications, Canadian Building Standards and Regulations that govern
- Knowledge of Construction materials, building trades, means and methods of the construction process, project scheduling, and the contractual obligations of sub-contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers through the construction process
- Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- Strong coordination and organizational skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Determination to set and manage priorities to meet all deadlines
- Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
- Self-motivated and ability to work detached from base support staff
