SGI CANADA is currently looking for experienced Personal Lines Underwriters to join our team!

NATURE OF WORK

The Underwriter 3 (Multi-line) is responsible for day-to-day team leadership and provides support, guidance advice and direction. In this role, you will underwrite complex, high touch and high value risks for Personal Lines insurance. Employees in this position, evaluate, rate, and process insurance requests for property and auto insurance products. The Underwriter 3 is customer focused and looks for innovative ways to improve the customer experience. The Underwriter 3 establishes relationships with brokers to develop lasting and profitable relationships. You will be accountable for evaluating and providing recommendations to improve profitability and overall performance on a portfolio basis. You will also mentor, delegate work, provide training, technical guidance, work review and approval to staff in junior positions. This role is about building relationships and continuously learning and developing knowledge about the end customers' needs through the broker.

Underwriting Operations

  • Evaluates multiple products and their risk factors in a holistic and customer-centric approach to determine risk acceptability and rating.

  • Reviews and evaluates quotes, new applications, renewals, revisions and cancellations to determine risk acceptability for high touch, high value, critical accounts, corporate accounts and key broker partners.

  • Evaluates complex risks and determines if risk is acceptable, needs modification, or should be declined based on analysis of all information pertinent to the risk and within the underwriter's authority.

  • Calculates premiums, ensuring that appropriate rates are used and application discounts and surcharges are applied within established underwriting guidelines, applicable laws and regulations.

  • Negotiates with brokers as to the conditions, limitations, rates, and premiums to apply.

  • Corresponds with brokers to request information and explain underwriting requirements and decisions.

  • Reviews and approves requests that fall outside the authority levels of staff in less senior positions.

  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to discuss risk acceptance and policy wording interpretation.

  • Interprets and applies policy wordings, conditions, limitations, rates and premiums with a strong focus on customer needs.

  • Completes large loss, underwriter reviews and claim alerts providing feedback and recommendations on underwriting decisions and actions.

  • Collaborates with loss prevention partners (internal and external) to measure risk acceptability and to improve risk.

  • Understands existing and emerging industry and regional trends and market conditions and obtains additional information on risk if required. Applies this knowledge to business decisions.

  • Analyzes and makes data-driven decisions on broker’s book of business.

  • Participates in periodic work reviews for quality assurance purposes for underwriters and brokers.

  • Participates in projects and initiative planning.

  • Identifies and recommends improvements to insurance products and/or systems.

  • Determine percentage of involvement in ceding and placement of policies (where required).

  • Provides exceptional service delivery in the management of portfolio underwriting, maintaining an informed mindset and challenging the status quo to provide the best underwriting service.

Broker Relationship Management

  • Delivers one view of personal lines that combines product, technology and services for broker partners.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve broker experience and seeks to find solutions while adhering to the company guidelines.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with an assigned group of brokers to develop lasting and profitable relationships, which involve broker visits.

  • Collaborates with claims and other departments to deliver a consistent experience to brokers and customers.

  • Assists with training to staff, brokers, and external parties on products and procedures. Prepares and conducts formal presentations. Understand the technology brokers use and offers tailored approaches to deliver on the ease of doing business mandate.

  • Explains underwriting criteria and decisions to brokers (verbally and/or in writing).

  • Evaluates broker's portfolios to identify positive or negative trends with respect to quantity and quality of business.

  • Proactively manages brokers to shape their portfolios to match SGI CANADA's target portfolio.

Knowledge and Skill

  • Knowledge of the coverages of applicable insurance products and related provincial/federal legislation.

  • Knowledge of insurance theory.

  • Knowledge and skill of the rating procedures, the interpretation and application of established criteria and/or procedures to determine appropriate premiums, coverages and deductibles for applicable insurance products.

  • Knowledge of reinsurance procedures and requirements.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or Associateship (AIIC) designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada (10 courses) OR equivalents from the SGI Equivalency Program OR a combination of the above.

  • Valid operator's licence.

Pay Range:$65,388.00 - $84,360.00
