(One Year Contractual Position with Possibility of Extension)

This Position is Funded Through An External Grant

An Analytical Chemist position is available immediately for a highly motivated individual to work in the Boreal Ecosystem Research Facility located on Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, Corner Brook, NL. The Analytical Chemist will join a multidisciplinary research team with expertise in hydrology, agronomy, soil science, environmental science, microbiology, neurobiology, food science, and plant biochemistry. We are seeking an Analytical chemist with expertise in using specialized chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques to understand the roles of lipid metabolism in mitigating environmental stress in a multidisciplinary context. Responsibilities include developing novel techniques (mass spectrometric, chromatographic, vibrational spectroscopy, and lipid imaging) to understand the roles of lipid metabolism (spatial, qualitative, and quantitative) in the strategies used by plants, animals, and/or microbes to overcome exposure to environmental stressors (disease, climatic, toxins, dietary, or nutrient imbalance); analyzing secondary metabolites from unique plant, animal, or microbial sources as functional food components (focus on antioxidants and lipids); training and supporting graduate students in day-to-day sample analysis; serving as a core member of the management team for the Lipid bioinformatics, functional foods innovation, and brain health research program; working with collaborators in Industry, academia, and government to facilitate and conduct lipidomics and antioxidant analysis in test samples; conducting lipid bioinformatics analysis including lipid modeling, multivariate/univariate analysis, regression, network, and pathway analysis; and performing other related duties as required. The candidate must be prepared to carry out laboratory as well as field activities, including set-up of field plot experiments, sampling, data collection, monitoring equipment, and protocols; generate peer-reviewed publications in top-tier scientific journals, be able to supervise undergraduate and graduate research assistant or students, and serve as Co-PI on future grant proposals.

Completion of coursework towards a PhD in any life or natural science related discipline. Experience in lipid bioinformatics or statistical analysis using any combination of lipid modeling, multivariate/univariate analysis, regression, network, and pathway analysis. Experience with lipid imaging mass spectrometry, and any combination of the following, are preferred: high resolution and tandem mass spectrometry, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS), atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry (APPI-MS), desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS), gas chromatography mass spectrometry/flame ionization detection (GC-MS/FID), thin layer chromatography-flame ionization detection (TLC-FID), and/or laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Experience using Orbitrap Mass Spectrometers and operating software for lipidomics is a serious asset. Experience using FTIR and Raman for lipids or oil analysis; chromatographic separation experience using any combination of the following: normal phase, reverse phase, size exclusion, solid phase micro-extraction (SPME), thin layer, gas, ion, and/or HILLIC phase separation, are also assets. The ideal candidate will possess a curiosity and passion for science, and a talent for independent research in life or natural sciences. This should be supported by a strong publication record with at least two first authored publications in respected journals.
