The Centre for Continuing Education of John Abbott College provides labour market training to adult learners. These upskilling and reskilling training opportunities reflect the changing needs of the Quebec labour market and thus prepare the adult learners for new job opportunities.
The* Program Innovation Advisor* (Education Advisor) acts as the central link between the students, the College and industry, supporting student academic and personal growth while leveraging industry input.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable in project management and facilitation of meaningful communication between people, sensitive towards the specific nature of getting things done in an academic environment, and keen on academic innovative practices and technological advances in industry.

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of the Centre for Continuing Education, the Program Innovation Advisor is responsible for three main portfolios:

  • Coordination of selected continuing education programs
  • Connecting industry needs and academic programs
  • Support for sound pedagogical practices and innovation in the continuing education sector

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement, develop and manage all aspects of selected AEC programs, such as, but not limited to: course scheduling; information sessions; prospective student selection; hiring and pedagogical integration of teachers; internship placements; support and advice to students and teachers, including conflict resolution, application of academic policies, program evaluations and revisions; and all other activities necessary to the smooth running of the program or course.
  • Provide support and advice to students and teachers, including conflict resolution and mediation where required.
  • In collaboration with College and external resources, mentor students during the academic and professional growth process.
  • Participate in faculty hiring and faculty evaluation process, as delegated by the Director.
  • Leveraging College and external resources, coordinate the transfer and implementation of best pedagogical practices and innovation to faculty in the Continuing Education Sector, with special attention to impactful teaching practices in a virtual learning environment.
  • Carry out responsibilities related to the role as advisor for Recognition of Prior Learning.
  • In collaboration with College resources, develop new or adjust existing digital tools such as program information and orientation sessions, marketing material, team collaboration and presentations.
  • Set up or improve mechanisms to ensure that relevant College policies are applied in a consistent manner to programs under their responsibility.
  • Actively develop and foster relationships with local businesses, industries and community groups, monitor emerging industry trends related to assigned programs, evaluate external training as well as AECs, other programs and courses; make recommendations for change.
  • Research and validate internship opportunities, accompany students in their search for internship opportunities.
  • Develop and set up mechanisms to connect students, faculty and industry, such as networking events, guest speakers, hackathons, project-based initiatives.
  • Monitor budgets and ensure that documentation is provided to outside funding sources in a timely manner, compose funding applications if required.
  • Attend regional and provincial meetings as required.
  • Participate in the Continuing Education team, briefing the Director regularly and providing input to other conseillers and conseillères pédagogiques as required.
  • Perform other relevant tasks related to the Continuing Educations sector, as may be requested by the Director.

EDUCATION:
Undergraduate degree in an appropriate field of specialization, particularly education.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Three (3) years directly related experience, preferably in Continuing Education, and/or liaison with the business sector and federal and provincial government agencies
  • Profound understanding of the needs of adult learners with diverse backgrounds, particularly adult learners training for the labor market
  • Track record in program management with multiple stakeholders
  • Solid understanding of pedagogical innovation and pedagogically impactful distance education
  • Knowledge of competency-based education an asset
  • Recent business experience and knowledge of newly emerging sectors of the industry, particularly in IT, Environment or Biopharmaceutical industry, an asset
  • Resourcefulness and strong interest to monitor industry trends through a variety of tools
  • Comfortable to network and engage with industry and public stakeholders
  • Strong desire to mentor adult students in their path towards employment
  • Track record in solving conflict situations through mediation and mentoring
  • Excellent information technology knowledge
  • Excellent organizational, human relations (problem resolution, advising, mediation) and communications skills
  • Ability to leverage teams and to be a contributing member to a variety of teams
  • Ability to multitask, work under time pressure and work fully self-directed
  • English (advanced oral and written)

  • Experience in the CEGEP system an asset
