Under the direction of the Chair, Health and Wellness, the Practical Nursing Specialist, Program Development, is responsible for development of all aspects of community and campus based Practical Nursing programming, Personal Support Worker, and other professional development programs specific to the healthcare sector and continuing care. The incumbent is responsible for realizing Nunavut Arctic College’s commitment to the Department of Health to graduate more Inuit and Nunavummiut with skills needed for home and continuing care or other related diplomas and certificates. The incumbent provides academic and administrative leadership in matters related to curriculum development and renewal, program operations, implementation of programming and evaluation, teaching and faculty development, student recruitment and advisement in the Licensed Practical Nursing programs.

A Practical Nursing diploma provides graduates with the theory, knowledge, judgement, and skills required to practice as Practical Nurses in a variety of settings included, but not limited to, acute care maternal/child, pediatrics, continuing care, long term care, mental health, public health, and community agencies. The graduates of PN educational program will be prepared to care for stable patients and patients with predictable health/illness outcomes, working within the scope of practice as determined by the Practical Nursing regulatory organization.

The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a Master’s degree in Nursing or Health Sciences with three year’s post-secondary teaching experience and program development; Five years of nursing experience in the clinical/practice area is required to ensure the delivery of quality programs, as per nursing standards, and an appropriate level of staff support; A minimum of 2 years’ experience in leading projects, and overseeing the work of consultants/contractors.

Nursing experience in northern or remote communities would be an asset.

The incumbent must be registered with the Registered Nurses Association of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut prior to taking the position.

This position is considered a position of trust and will require criminal record check.

Equivalencies consisting of a combination of education and work experience may be considered.
