Role

The Government and Community Relations Officer oversees the Corporation’s interests among communities and government stakeholder groups by identifying and addressing issues that could inhibit SLSMC’s mandate, mission and strategic direction. This role will develop and implement engagement strategies and tools.

Responsibilities

  • Support and develop the Corporate Stakeholder Engagement and Mobilization Strategy and administer the community and government relations processes including the evaluation of outcomes to raise awareness and strengthen the organisation’s reputation
  • Maintain appropriate and effective engagement approaches and practices in line with Corporate Stakeholder Engagement and Mobilization Strategy and to support the strategic objectives of the organization.
  • Prepare high-quality briefing and presentation materials for external community audiences and senior internal stakeholders Develop and manage community and government contact database, assessing information and action on it where necessary.
  • Maintain an event/activity annual calendar in line with upcoming community and government developments
  • Serve as point of contact for community enquiries and coordinate engagement activities in the field ensuring a two-way dialogue between the Corporation and its external partners.
  • Establish and execute performance measurement and reporting of corporate stakeholder engagement and mobilization strategy
  • Coordinate the SLSMC’s participation in external events, oversee and execute the development of corporate and bi¬national initiatives.
  • Conduct external stakeholder opinion surveys to identify the interests and concerns of key groups. Support the community relations response to crisis situation which affect the Corporation’s reputation and perception

Experience and knowledge

  • Minimum of eight (8) years experience with relevant professional qualifications.
  • Previous experience of stakeholder engagement, preferably gained in a medium-sized organization undergoing change
  • Experience of working closely with Communication and Senior colleagues and strong experience of building networks and relationships to deliver results.
  • Very strong stakeholder engagement skills with ability to handle sensitive situations, adapt to multiple audience and maintaining confidentiality, where necessary
  • Ability to develop engagement strategies such as but not only surveys, information sessions, consultations, two-way dialogues, etc)
  • Be able to meet specific needs while being transparent and visible among policy makers, community representatives and public support.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage own workload effectively but also to be flexible and adapt/respond to emerging issues, short deadlines and other demands or challenges

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public relations, communications or journalism or Political Sciences
