Reporting to the Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Program Supervisor, the MHA Youth Program Facilitator works closely with the with the health care team and community organizations to promote mental health wellness amongst young Nunavummiut.

The purpose of this position is to determine community needs for children and youth, identify and provide programs designed to improve the well-being of young people. The MHA Youth Program Facilitator will establish supportive relationships with youth and their families to empower them to actively participate in mental health wellness. This position will reinforce, practice and model the mental health strategies of the Department of Health as part of the MHA team.

The MHA Youth Program Facilitator provides general support and advocacy to help children and youth meet their needs by developing and facilitating community-based programs. Effective delivery of these programs will impact on the safety, confidence and overall well-being of children, youth and their families, in addition to enhancing and increasing access to MHA services.

An in-depth knowledge of techniques, methods and practices of communications are required to organize and deliver community-based wellness programs for children and youth. The position requires a strong commitment to the rights and abilities of children and youth to live to their fullest potential. Ability to respond calmly and effectively in a crisis and deal effectively in potentially stressful situations are required for this position. The position requires skills and competence to establish supportive, trusting relationships to provide life skills coaching to children and youth and their family or support networks. The position requires knowledge of child and youth mental health and addictions issues and the community demographics, culture and history as well as the community and territorial mental health and addictions resources. The position requires effective verbal and written communication skills to be able to establish and maintain effective services to clients, families, staff, other service providers and to the community in general. Basic computer skills and ability to present information to small groups or individuals, in person or on radio is required. Ability to flex schedule to accommodate evening and weekend programs and ability to work as part of a team and independently are required. Knowledge of relevant acts, regulations, policies, standards, protocols and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Principals and Values and willingness to participate in training are required for this position.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized certificate in social services, child and/or youth work, mental health or related field, along with one year of experience working in child and/or youth work, mental health or related field. A valid driver’s license is a requirement.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut (Inuinnaqtun), English and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset.

Current first aid and CPR is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
