Reporting to the Mental Health and Addictions - Program Supervisor, the Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Outreach Worker provides front-line mental health and addictions services and support for clients dealing with mental health illnesses, suicidal ideation, family violence, and/or addictions. The MHA Outreach Worker will deliver community-based programs and navigate services to reinforce, practice and model therapeutic techniques and treatments as part of the MHA care team.
The MHA Outreach Worker Program provides practical help and supports, advocacy, coordination, individualized support, problem solving, direct assistance, and training to help clients obtain the skills necessary to improve their mental well-being. The MHA Outreach worker will identify community needs and develop, coordinate and facilitate programs to promote successful wellness initiatives.
A strong commitment to the rights and ability of persons with mental illness to live to their fullest capacity and respect for client rights and person choices of treatment are required to be successful in this position. The incumbent must have knowledge in community mental health and addiction issues as well as the community and territorial resources that are available to clients. The incumbent must have knowledge of community demographics, culture and history, including Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Principals and Values and be able to comfortably present information to small groups or individuals. The incumbent must have techniques of communications to organize promotional activities, deliver radio call-in shows and facilitate information sessions so it would be important for the incumbent to have ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with clients, families, staff and other service providers, and the community in general. Ability to respond calmly and deal effectively with high stress and in crisis situation are required for this position. Ability to prioritize multiple demands while working as a member of a team and independently are required for this position. The incumbent must be able to establish supportive, trusting relationships with persons with mental health and/or addictions and their families. The incumbent must be willing to participate in required training.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized diploma in social services, mental health or a related field, along with two (2) years of experience working in mental health or a related field. A valid driver’s license is required for this position.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset. Current first aid and BCLS is an asset.
Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatugangit is an asset.
