In co-operation with Student Support Teacher (SST) and the classroom teacher, the Student Support Assistant (SSA) assists classroom teacher in implementing and delivering education programs for students, particularly those students whose education program require accommodations and/or curricular individualization, participates in instructional team and school team meetings as requested, provides personal care support as required, participates in professional growth activities and acts in a professional manner. The SSA plays an integral role in supporting the delivery of education program and student progress.

As assigned to a particular classroom by the Principal, duties of the SSA may be many and varied depending on particular situation but they do not replace the professional responsibilities of teacher(s) to oversee and direct the activities of the class. The SSA may work with students requiring additional support or may serve as a resource for the whole class. The SSA is required to be patient, flexible and adaptable, it is also crucial that the SSA work to build trust, rapport and caring relationship with students assigned to, encouragement to students and support their development of independence.

The Student Support Assistant must have a patient, caring, student-centred attitude, must have general knowledge of the goals, objectives and operations of the school. Candidate must have good written and oral communication skills in Inuktut and English and good interpersonal skills, must also have basic computer literacy skills, an understanding of privacy and confidentiality and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Ideal candidate would have First Aid and ASIST training. Requirements for the SSA are typically met by someone who has completed high school or Adult Basic Education program equivalent to Grade 12 or higher.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut (Inuinnaqtun), English and French.

Ability to communicate in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages and the knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit are considered assets.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
