Research Manager
Neonatology, BC Woman’s Hospital + Health Centre, Vancouver

The Research Manager has a leadership role with all research staff in the Division and a close working relationship with the Principal Investigators. The Research Manager liaises with researchers, the Canadian Neonatal Network & other associated national networks, industry sponsors, the community and other allied health professionals The Research Manager operates in a complex research environment in which several institutions (C&W, UBC, and other health care facilities), as well as Principal Investigators and private industries are involved. As a key role in the research activities of C&W and UBC, the Research Manager ensures the interests of both parties and the organizations’ resources are appropriately managed within research guidelines, agreements and contracts. This involves management of documentation for ethical approvals for new and ongoing studies in addition to managing the various stages of research projects from the application to completions stages. The Research Manager ensures the approval process is expedited and regulatory requirements are met at all times. This position supports research team members toward the achievement of strategic goals through effective communication of the research vision and values.



The Research Manager communicates with direct reports and all levels of individuals involved in research. Communications are primarily with Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, Research Coordinators, Research Nurses, Research Assistants/Technicians, Division Head, Women's Health Research Institute, BC Children's Hospital Research Institute, Clinical Research Ethics Board at C&W and UBC, Business Operation Manager, Financial Managers and other departments and resources that have a role in research. Communications consist of the relaying of information, discussing and implementing existing and new policies and procedures in the management of research activities. The Research Manager is integral in training and educating all research support personnel and trainees (data abstractors, fellows, residents, graduate and undergraduate students) in the parameters of research activities. In addition, the Research Manager liaises with a multitude of hospital personnel in achieving the research mandate of the Department, which may include: Clinical Research Support Unit (CRSU) members, Program Coordinators from other departments at C&W and the UBC Department of Pediatrics, such as Finance and Human Resources. The Research Manager also has contact with the University Industry Liaison Office (UILO), industry representatives, sponsors and other regulatory bodies of the clinical trials, and industry and Health Canada monitors. Relationships with other universities at both national or international levels as well as partners within the research networks are required.

What you’ll do
  • Coordinate and manage research projects which include planning, implementation, completion and evaluation, and ensure that all requirements at all institutional levels are met and maintained.
  • Develop research methodology, assist in writing grants, prepare ethical review applications, and other documentation associated with the grant applications and research projects.
  • Manage regulatory documentation around the study approval and renewal process.
  • Provide intellectual input into study design of protocols. Review protocols and agreements for ethical integrity, accuracy and feasibility to meet scientific and ethical integrity standards.
  • Liaise with UBC Ethics Committee to determine status of the concurrent UBC ethics approval and assist investigators in resolving related issues.

What you bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health related discipline, plus a minimum of five (5) to Seven (7) years of recent clinical trials experience in an academic health care setting or a related industry, and three (3) years of relevant leadership and supervisory experience.
You will also have:
  • Demonstrated understanding of clinical issues, knowledge of scientific terminology and research methodology in the health sector.
  • Experience with research practices and clinical trials administration.
  • Ability to provide guidance on the interpretation and application of organizational clinical trial agreement policies and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Strong analytical skills, and is a problem solver who works with integrity, adaptability and originality..
