Qulliq Energy Corporation

Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory’s communities.

QEC 21-038 - Environmental Specialist

Based out of Iqaluit, Nunavut and reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety, and Environment, the Environmental Specialist is responsible for ensuring that the Corporation operates in compliance with municipal, territorial, and national environmental standards. The position also conducts site inspections, responds to environmental incidents, and coordinates remediation efforts where incidents occur.

Work is structured by the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Nunavut Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulation, Nunavut Environmental Protection Act, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act structure work, and other related rules and regulation.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducts annual environmental site inspections of power plants, tanks, pipelines, or other similar infrastructure.
  • Ensures operational compliance in line with various national, territorial, and municipal environmental compliance standards and related regulations.
  • Coordinates environmental projects such as waste removal, site assessments, site delineations, site cleanups, risk assessments, and annual soil sampling.
  • Assists in the planning of capital projects and the decommissioning of power plants, tanks, pipelines, or other similar infrastructure that has exceeded its useful life.
  • Works with local Government to develop emergency response in event of environmental contamination.
  • Conducts research and prepares reports and procedures for various environmental issues the corporation must consider during operations.
  • Presents environment concerns and updates to regulations during the annual operator-training program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma in Environmental Technology.
  • Three years of experience in organizing and managing environmental programs, preferably in a utility setting.
  • Class 5 driver’s license, including the ability to meet insurance requirements.

Assets:

  • Professional designation as a certified Environmental Professional (EP) is an asset.
  • Experience working in a utility environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language and culture.
  • The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and/or French.

We offer a competitive starting salary range of $93,268 to $108,946 with a northern living allowance of $15,016 per annum, a comprehensive benefits package including a defined benefit pension program and subsidized staff housing. This position is included in the Nunavut Employees Union.

Preference will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
