The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport’s mission is to enhance economic growth and support quality of life by managing the provincial parks system and providing recreation, sport, heritage and cultural opportunities for residents and visitors. The Ministry is currently seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to work as part of a team to assist with the planning and implementation of water-based recreation in an outdoor leisure pool setting.
As a Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard you will assist in the implementation of the Red Cross Swim program by providing a fun and interactive environment for children to learn aquatic skills and water safety both in the water and on deck. You will be capable of delivering lessons that are interesting, effective and age appropriate. This position will also plan and deliver aquatic fitness sessions that are energetic and fun to adult participants. You will assist in planning and implementing special events that are consistent with the parks goals and objectives. You will provide lifeguard duties during public swim times by ensuring a safe swimming environment, by being attentive to swimmers, enforcing safety rules and educating the public about water safety in and around the water. This position is responsible for assisting with daily maintenance of pool facility, chemical testing and reporting, checking lifesaving equipment and providing input into improvements to the pool facility program.
A successful candidate will have knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and equipment used in water-based recreation. You will know and understand the methods and techniques for delivering Red Cross swim lessons and lifeguard procedures. Knowledge of other aquatic based activities such as aquafit, synchronized swim, and snorkeling is an advantage. The position requires knowledge of pool operations including safety, cleaning and other pool maintenance. You may also have knowledge of other water-based recreation as it relates to a park environment.
The ideal candidate will hold current certifications in the following; Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and LSS National Lifeguard - Pool Certification. You will also hold a Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification. Considerations may be given to those with Bronze Cross and Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) certifications. Other aquatic certifications such as Aquatic Emergency Care and Lifesaving Instructor or others are assets to the position.
You will have experience working with children either through instructing swim lessons, camp counselor, youth leader or other related volunteer or work position. You will have the desire to work in the outdoors and be able to tolerate hot temperatures or cooler temperatures for longer periods.
