About Us


The Marine Services division of the Department of Transportation and Active Transit maintains and operates the provincial ferries including: Englishtown, Little Narrows, Country Harbor, LaHave River, Tancook Island, and Digby Neck. Our Marine staff help to further connect and expand Nova Scotia’s transportation network; all the while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our Ferries. Our provincial ferries operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

Primary Accountabilities


Under the general supervision of the Captain-In Charge, the Captain 2 is in complete charge, and responsible for, the safe and efficient operation and navigation of the vehicle/passenger ferry between specific points in minor waters; directing the crew in all phases of their work and ensuring the ferry’s trip schedules are maintained. The Captain supervises the crew in loading and off loading freight, performing routine maintenance, and cleaning of the ferry and equipment. The ferry is in 24 hour operation, 365 days per year.


Qualifications and Experience


High school completion or an acceptable equivalent combination of knowledge and experience plus a valid Transport Canada Master Certificate, Limited for a vessel of 60 gross tonnage or more. Previous seafaring experience is an asset.


You must have your:


  • Marine Emergency Duties Domestic Vessel Safety Certificate;
  • Seafarer’s Marine Medical Certificate; and
  • A Marine First Aid Certificate.

Working Conditions


May be occasioned by diesel fumes from equipment, noise and dust. Outside work is required in varying weather conditions. Shift work is required, including nights and weekends.

Pay Grade: MOS 22

Salary Range: $2,418.57 - $2,500.36 Bi-Weekly
