The Approvals and Permitting Team has an opportunity for an Intermediate Ecologist in one of our Atlantic Canada offices. The successful candidate will join our team of aquatic and terrestrial biologists who value teamwork and enjoy the company of their colleagues. Your Key Responsibilities

  • Project Coordination tasks, working under the supervision of Project Managers:
  • Plan (i.e., develop scope and budget) and manage/oversee ecological programs, such as baseline studies, environmental assessments, impact assessments and species at risk assessments
  • Manage tasks and/or projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget
  • Maintain and develop client and regulatory relationships
  • Provide understanding of project goals and sound environmental project advice to external clients and internal Stantec contacts
  • Embrace and promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work

Primary Ecology tasks:

  • Conduct background reviews for natural heritage information
  • Coordinate and implement industry standard protocols, including the following (depending on skill set):
  • Wildlife surveys and wildlife habitat assessments
  • Botanical inventories and descriptions of vegetation communities
  • Monitoring of plant communities
  • Wetland delineation and functional assessments
  • Aquatic habitat assessments (including fish and benthic macroinvertebrates)
  • Sediment and water quality sampling
  • Assessment of species at risk and of conservation concern
  • Breeding bird and bird migration surveys (ability to identify birds by song required)
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of construction phase mitigation efforts for species at risk or other sensitive species or features
  • Enter, compile, and analyze field data
  • Prepare reports and contribute to a variety of planning projects such as environmental assessments and environmental impact studies
  • Identify constraints to construction and mitigation and approval requirements
  • Prepare applications for authorization under the Species at Risk Act, 2002, Endangered Species Act, 2007, Fisheries Act, 1985, or other legislation
  • Occasionally travel for work, including field work in remote locations, including periods of intense travel during the field season, and on weekends
  • Support operations of the ecosystems team through a variety of administrative tasks
  • Participate in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements, including experience with regulators such as Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Nova Scotia Environment and Department of Lands and Forestry
  • Experience planning, coordinating and implementing ecological field programs
  • Experience managing budgets and invoicing clients, or identify these skills as career development priorities
  • Proven technical communication, writing and organization skills, including demonstrated experience preparing technical reports
  • Strong organization skills
  • Able to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Self-motivated and thrives in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects
  • Valid driver’s licence

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or technical diploma in a related field is required as a minimum

Minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field in Atlantic Canada
